Katie Couric is celebrating a new family milestone and giving followers their first photo of herself with newborn granddaughter Virginia Louise.
The journalist shared an Instagram post on Wednesday, June 17, showing herself holding the baby while wearing a New York Knicks jersey. People reported that Virginia was dressed in a floral onesie as Couric cradled her in the photo.
“Introducing Virginia Louise!” Couric wrote in the caption. She said Virginia was born on May 30, weighed 8 lbs., 5 oz., and made her a “very happy Gogo.”

Virginia is the second child for Couric’s daughter Ellie Monahan and Ellie’s husband, Mark Dobrosky. Couric also shared that Ellie, 35, is “doing great” after giving birth.
The baby joins big brother Jay, 2. Couric joked in the caption that Jay is “coping” with the arrival of his new sibling.
Couric had told People in late April that Ellie was expecting her second child on June 5. At the time, she said it would be a “very exciting summer” for Ellie and Mark, while also wondering how Jay would feel about having a new baby in the house.
Jay’s Name Honors Couric’s Late Husband
Couric became a grandmother for the first time in March 2024, when Ellie and Mark welcomed John Albert Dobrosky. The family calls him Jay in honor of Couric’s late husband, John “Jay” Monahan.
Monahan died of colon cancer in 1998 at age 42. Couric shares daughters Ellie and Carrie with him; Ellie was 6 and Carrie was 2 when he died.
Couric has spoken about how much she values family milestones after losing Monahan so young. In the same People story, she said she cherishes weddings, births and graduations because her late husband missed so many of those moments with their daughters.
Couric also shared the news of Virginia’s birth on her own site earlier in June, writing that she was “Gogo again.” She said she was looking forward to watching Jay and Virginia grow up together and seeing Ellie and Mark become parents of two.
