Kit Harington is speaking more directly about the difficult period that followed the end of Game of Thrones, including the six-week rehab stay that began just as the show’s final season was reaching viewers.

During a new Variety Actors on Actors conversation with former co-star Peter Dinklage, Harington said he decided to go to rehab as the first episode of Season 8 was airing. E! News reported that Harington described the stay as six weeks of isolation without his phone, saying he needed to get sober and “get my head on straight.”

Harington Said the Timing Was a Coincidence

Harington said the timing of his rehab stay lining up with the final season premiere was not planned around the show. The decision also meant stepping away from a major press cycle for one of the biggest television endings of the decade.

He said one reason not to go was the pressure to promote the final season and be “front and center.” Instead, he decided he could not do it and removed himself from the public-facing rollout.

Dinklage joked that actors will do anything to get out of press, but Harington said missing that cycle was a real relief.

He Missed the Final Season While It Was Airing

Because he was in treatment, Harington missed the public release of the show’s final episodes. That gave one of television’s most recognizable actors a strange distance from the finale that millions of viewers were watching and debating in real time.

The situation was especially unusual because Jon Snow was central to the ending. Harington had carried the role for all eight seasons, and the finale marked the end of a character that had defined his public identity for nearly a decade.

The 2019 Report Was More Guarded

At the time, Harington’s team described the stay in broader terms. Entertainment Weekly reported in 2019 that his representative said Harington was using a break in his schedule to spend time at a wellness retreat and work on personal issues.

That earlier statement was more cautious than Harington’s new comments. In the conversation with Dinklage, he spoke plainly about sobriety, needing help, and choosing to step away when the rest of the world expected him to be promoting the show.

Harington has spoken before about the emotional intensity around the end of Game of Thrones. The series made him internationally famous, brought him Emmy recognition, and connected him to Rose Leslie, whom he married in 2018.

The end of the show also arrived with pressure, fan scrutiny, and the burden of closing a character who had followed him through most of his adult life. In the new interview, Harington said the time after the show helped him figure out who he was and whether he still loved acting.

He Took Time Away Before Rebuilding His Career

After rehab, Harington said he planned to take a year away from acting to get sorted. The timing became even stranger when the COVID-19 pandemic hit just as he was preparing to re-engage with work more carefully.

That pause became part of a larger reset. Harington has since taken on projects including Eternals, Industry, Blood for Dust, and The Dreadful, building a post-Thrones career that is not only tied to Jon Snow.

He Also Reconnected With Dinklage Through the Interview

The new Actors on Actors conversation was meaningful because Harington and Dinklage had not seen each other in person since the Game of Thrones finale.

Entertainment Weekly noted that Harington also remembered filming his first on-camera scene with Dinklage. He admitted he was so inexperienced that he thought screen acting meant staying as still as possible, then wondered why Dinklage was moving so much.

That memory gives the rehab discussion a wider frame. Harington entered Game of Thrones as a young actor learning the camera, then left as someone who needed time away from the pressure that came with the role.
