Kristen Stewart had an unusually personal perspective on the director of her latest movie. In The Wrong Girls, the actress stars for her wife Dylan Meyer, who is making her feature directorial debut with a project she had been developing long before the two became a couple.
Stewart said Meyer impressed her with the way she built a team around the film and then invited those collaborators to make the material their own. In an E! News interview, she described her wife’s approach as “beautiful, delicate, gentle” and “inviting.”
Stewart said the crew became deeply invested in Meyer’s vision and was willing to follow her wherever the production required, adding that making the movie was “so much fun.”
Meyer says she had Stewart in mind for the role years before they reconnected in 2019, turning a creative instinct from early in their friendship into the first feature in which she has directed her wife.
Meyer Wanted Stewart in the Movie Years Before They Dated
Meyer told E! that she shared the project with Stewart roughly seven years before the two reconnected and began dating. “I actually shared it with her probably seven years before we ever reconnected and started dating,” Meyer said. “When I first met her, I always wanted Kristen to be in the movie.”
She then turned to Stewart and jokingly clarified, “That’s not why I started dating you.” Stewart and Meyer first met on a film set in 2013 before reconnecting at a friend’s birthday party in 2019. Their relationship became romantic that year, and they married in April 2025.
PEOPLE reported that Meyer still viewed Stewart as the ideal choice when the project finally moved forward. “On its surface, a lot of people have been surprised by this casting,” Meyer said. “But to know Kristen is to know that she’s kind of similar to me and to these characters.”
Stewart Praised the Way Meyer Led the Set
Stewart focused less on the novelty of taking direction from her spouse and more on how Meyer worked with the entire production. “It’s the way that she chooses the people that surround the thing that she loves so much,” Stewart said.
“You have to find people that love it just as much, because as a filmmaker, it’s yours first, but then it has to transfer.” She said Meyer was particularly good at making that transfer happen.
“Dylan has this beautiful, delicate, gentle, inviting ability to be like, ‘This is yours,’” Stewart said. “And so the crew was ready to jump into any hot or cold water for her. It was so much fun to make this movie.”
‘The Wrong Girls’ Is Meyer’s Feature Directorial Debut
The Wrong Girls stars Stewart and Alia Shawkat as two codependent best friends living “paycheck to paycheck and bong rip to bong rip” whose lives are thrown into chaos by a case of mistaken identity. The official NEON listing also names LaKeith Stanfield, Zack Fox, Tony Hale, Kate McKinnon, Geena Davis, Seth Rogen and Kumail Nanjiani among the cast.
The movie marks Meyer’s feature directorial debut and the first feature in which she has directed Stewart. The couple had already worked together professionally after marrying, with Meyer serving as a producer on Stewart’s own feature directorial debut, The Chronology of Water. The Wrong Girls opens in theaters August 14.
