Madonna and Justin Bieber reportedly disagreed over creative direction and prominence while preparing for the first FIFA World Cup final halftime show.
A Daily Mail report published before the July 19 final cited an unnamed source who claimed that neither performer wanted to leave the production feeling as though they had “played second fiddle.”
The source characterized Bieber as favoring a restrained, music-focused appearance, while Madonna reportedly argued that the tournament’s first official halftime show demanded a larger spectacle.
Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, who curated the multi-artist program, was reportedly attempting to balance their competing ideas.
Madonna Reportedly Refused to Be Pushed Into the Background
The reported disagreement centered on how the two stars would divide attention within an 11-minute show shared with BTS, Shakira, Burna Boy and several additional performers. “Neither wants to walk away feeling like they played second fiddle,” the source said. “Their different approaches have created real tension behind the scenes.”
The insider claimed Madonna respected Bieber and wanted the production to succeed but had “no intention of being upstaged.” She reportedly resisted any plan that risked turning the shared performance into “The Justin Show.”

The unnamed source said Bieber wanted his appearance to remain “clean, controlled” and focused on the music, without elaborate staging or unnecessary risks that could overshadow the song. Jason Sudeikis and Brendan Hunt appeared as their Ted Lasso characters to introduce Bieber as a substitute entering the match before he walked onto the field alone with an acoustic guitar.
Bieber performed “Everything Hallelujah” from his 2025 album Swag II, changing the final words to “World Cup Hallelujah.” He did not use a dance crew, costume change or large set piece during the brief performance. Vanity Fair described him as a solitary figure on the field, while Reuters reported that his acoustic number deliberately slowed the pace after BTS performed “Dynamite.”

A prerecorded sequence showed Madonna performing “Music” before she entered New York New Jersey Stadium in a dune buggy driven by Brazilian soccer legends Ronaldo and Ronaldinho.
She wore a pink corset and sporty jacket while performing with dancers on the colorful field covering. Her opening then transitioned into conductor Gustavo Dudamel leading musicians from New York and Venezuela alongside the Muppets’ Electric Mayhem for “Seven Nation Army.”
After Bieber’s segment, Shakira and Burna Boy performed the official tournament song, “Dai Dai.” The show concluded with Coldplay, the PS22 Chorus and additional performers as the word “LOVE” appeared across the field, with an image of Earth forming the letter O.
