Melania Trump and White House aide Natalie Harp were both inside President Donald Trump’s orbit at the Freedom 250 Grand Prix on August 23, creating an unusual public overlap after weeks of attention surrounding Harp’s access to the president.
Melania accompanied her husband to the inaugural IndyCar race in Washington, D.C., riding with him around the 1.7-mile street circuit in the presidential motorcade before Trump waved the green flag to start the race. Harp was also in the presidential spectator area, sitting only a few feet behind the first couple, according to TMZ.
The appearance came as Harp has faced increased coverage over her unusually close access to Trump, her role handling information and communications for him and personal letters she wrote to him before joining the White House staff. The Daily Beast has separately reported claims that Melania has been irritated by Harp’s constant presence.
For Melania, the race marked her second high-profile appearance in four days. She returned to public view at the White House on August 20 after going 32 days without a public event, using a Rose Garden appearance to announce a major expansion of her Fostering the Future initiative.
Melania Joined Trump for a Lap Around the Freedom 250 Course
Melania was alongside the president for some of the day’s most visible moments. The couple met several drivers before riding around the temporary Washington street circuit in “The Beast,” the presidential limousine, as part of a pre-race lap.
Trump later waved the green flag from the presidential viewing area to begin the race. The Freedom 250 covered 147 laps and approximately 250 miles on a seven-turn circuit winding around the National Mall.
Melania also gave a live interview at the event. Speaking with Fox Sports reporter Jamie Little, she said she “loved every minute” of the race and revealed that her interest in cars began while she was growing up in Slovenia.
According to PEOPLE, Melania recalled that her father introduced her to racing and cars, including brands such as Maserati and Mustang. She said the experience contributed to her enduring interest in automotive design and speed.
Natalie Harp Was Seated Just Behind the First Couple
Harp was not positioned beside Trump during the race, but footage from the event showed her within the larger presidential group. TMZ reported that she was seated only a few feet behind Trump and Melania as they watched the competition.
The Daily Beast has reported that Harp’s nearly constant presence around the president has irritated Melania. The White House, meanwhile, has publicly defended Harp and rejected broader suggestions that there is something improper about her relationship with Trump.
Harp’s Access to Trump Has Drawn New Scrutiny
Harp, 35, has worked closely with Trump for years and now serves as his executive assistant. Her duties have reportedly included carrying printed news and messages for the president, helping manage his social-media operation and traveling extensively with him.
The attention intensified after The Daily Beast published two letters that Trump biographer Michael Wolff said Harp wrote to Trump in 2023. In one, she told him, “You are all that matters to me,” while also apologizing repeatedly and thanking him for being her “Guardian and Protector in this Life.”
The letters predate Harp’s current White House position. Their publication has fueled questions about the boundaries of her relationship with Trump, but the correspondence does not establish a romantic or sexual relationship between them.
Separate scrutiny has focused on her access to sensitive presidential settings. The Daily Beast reported that Harp worked in the White House for more than a year without completing the standard security-clearance process and that Trump’s intervention was eventually required to begin that process.
The White House has strongly defended Harp amid the coverage. Spokesperson Davis Ingle called her one of Trump’s “most loyal and hardest-working aides,” while Eric Trump has also publicly praised her commitment to his father and her work.
Sen. Bernie Moreno added his own defense while attending the Grand Prix, telling TMZ that he viewed much of the criticism directed at Harp as misogynistic. Moreno argued that a male aide displaying comparable dedication to a president would not attract the same level of commentary about his appearance or personal motives.
Melania Had Returned to Public View Only Three Days Earlier
Melania’s Grand Prix appearance followed her August 20 return to the White House spotlight after 32 days without a public event. She opened her Rose Garden remarks by joking, “I heard you missed me.”
The event centered on an expansion of Fostering the Future, the initiative she established in 2021 to improve educational and economic opportunities for young people who have experienced foster care.
The White House announced that IndyCar and Fox Corporation are contributing $2 million to support scholarships at Indiana University and Purdue University. Their addition expands the initiative’s network to 26 colleges and universities. The partnership was carried directly into the Freedom 250 weekend.
