Michael Douglas says he never gave up hope that he and Catherine Zeta-Jones would reconcile during their 2013 separation.

The actor revisits the break in One Helluva Ride, released October 6th by Grand Central Publishing.

“She’s my wife, my best friend, and my life partner. I could never lose her,” Douglas writes in a passage published by Entertainment Weekly.

He describes the decision to spend time apart as one they made together while still loving each other. They wanted to work out whether remaining married was the best choice for their whole family.

Douglas Rented a Home Nearby During the Separation

After returning from a vacation and having a heart-to-heart with Zeta-Jones, Douglas moved out of the family home. He rented another place nearby so he could remain close to their children, Dylan and Carys.

The couple spoke regularly, rather than every day, as they tried to give each other space.

Douglas describes the experience as incredibly difficult and recalls both parents working to reassure the children that the separation was not their fault and that they were still deeply loved.

He writes that Dylan and Carys showed considerable strength throughout the upheaval. In his account, their trust in their parents held firm while the adults worked through the uncertainty.

School functions, drop-offs and extracurricular activities brought Douglas and Zeta-Jones into each other’s company. He writes that those encounters made them realize how much they missed being together.

By 2014, they had reconciled. Douglas says the time apart helped “reignite the spark” that first brought them together.

On November 18th, 2025, Zeta-Jones marked their 25th wedding anniversary with a carousel of wedding photographs. Her caption recalled the flowers, candles and Welsh choir, along with the sight of Douglas waiting for her as she walked down the aisle.

“I love you today as I did then,” she wrote. “Thank you sweetheart.”

Douglas’s own tribute used an archival photograph of the couple and included a question: “Who knew?”

When The Sunday Times recently asked how he had won Zeta-Jones back, Douglas described their reconciliation as mutual. He acknowledged that they had faced problems and emphasized how much work a marriage requires.

In his memoir, Douglas describes their relationship as stronger than ever and says they still enjoy long conversations on the couch or walks on the beach.

Zeta-Jones offered her own account of their time together in a September 30th interview with AARP Movies for Grownups. Calling them “historic homebodies,” she said their ideal day starts with Wordle, usually with her solving it first and Douglas asking for help.

Breakfast and a gym session would be followed by a light lunch and a 40-minute power nap. They would play golf in the afternoon, then return for dinner prepared at home. She said they might watch a movie afterward, although they spend more time watching sports together.
