Nicky Campbell says his daughter Lilla is recovering at home after she was badly injured in an e-bike hit-and-run in Peckham, south London.

The Long Lost Family presenter said Lilla, 26, was out with her sisters when she was hit. Campbell wrote that the rider left after an ambulance arrived and a crowd gathered, and he said he hoped CCTV would help identify the person involved.

The crash has drawn new attention after the Daily Mail reported that e-bike riders were still running red lights at the Peckham crossing where Lilla was hit.

Campbell has not said the crossing caused the crash. His post focused on Lilla’s injuries, the rider leaving the scene, the hospital care his daughter received, and his family’s relief that she was back home.

Campbell wrote on Instagram that it had been “a long and emotional night” after Lilla was hit by an e-bike in Peckham.

The Standard reported that Lilla was with her three sisters at the time. Campbell said the rider “scarpered” after seeing the ambulance arrive.

“She is badly injured but now at home,” Campbell wrote, according to The Standard. “It could have been so much worse. We are incredibly lucky.”

Campbell also said police later arrested a man at King’s College Hospital after a separate incident in A&E. He thanked the Met Police and the doctors and nurses who treated Lilla.

The Peckham Crossing Is Now Under Scrutiny

The Daily Mail’s follow-up report focused on the crossing where Lilla was hit. The outlet said riders were still ignoring red lights at the site and described the Peckham location as a “Wild West” crossing.

The report said the incident happened around Rye Lane, where traffic restrictions introduced during the Covid pandemic remain in place.

Campbell has not publicly accused local authorities of causing the crash. His post said he hoped CCTV would help identify the rider.

UK E-Bike Rules Set Limits on Speed and Use

Under GOV.UK rules, riders must be at least 14 to ride an electrically assisted pedal cycle, or EAPC. A legal EAPC must have pedals, and its motor must not be able to propel the bike when it is travelling at more than 15.5 mph.

Legal EAPCs can be used on cycle paths and anywhere else pedal bikes are allowed. GOV.UK says they cannot be ridden on pavements.

If an electric bike does not meet EAPC rules, it is classed as a motorcycle or moped. That means it must be registered, taxed and insured, and the rider needs a valid driving licence and motorcycle helmet.

The Met Has Targeted Illegal E-Bikes

The Metropolitan Police said in March that officers had seized 52 illegal e-bikes and mopeds during a two-day operation in the West End and Harlesden.

The Met said those seizures were part of longer-running enforcement against illegal e-bikes, e-scooters and mopeds used in crime and anti-social behaviour.

The force also said there had been 2,741 seizures of illegal e-bikes and e-scooters across London in 2025 and 2026.
