A Louisiana woman says a routine Planet Fitness visit ended when an employee told her that her membership carried an unexplained $500 balance.

Kate said she had continued paying for a Black Card membership and its annual fee, leaving her confused about how the amount accumulated. According to her account, the club manager would not identify the charges and told her to pay the full balance or leave.

Kate refused to hand over $500 without seeing what she was being charged for.

A $500 Balance Appeared When She Tried to Check In

Kate described the encounter in a TikTok video covered by We Got This Covered. She said she arrived at the gym and attempted to scan her membership as usual. An employee she did not recognize stopped her and said the account showed an overdue balance.

The amount was reportedly $500. Kate identified the employee as the club’s manager. Kate said she questioned how she could owe that much while continuing to pay her monthly dues and annual membership fee.

According to Kate, the manager would not provide a transaction history or explain what created the balance. Kate said the employee instead repeated that she could either pay the $500 or leave without entering the gym.

The discussion continued for approximately 15 minutes before Kate walked outside. She returned after deciding that the demand still required an explanation but said she received the same response.

Her Cancellation Request Led to Another Dispute

Kate said she asked to cancel her membership when the manager continued to deny her entry. The employee allegedly offered to sign the cancellation paperwork for her.

Kate refused because she did not want another person placing a signature on a document submitted under her name. Kate reportedly stopped using the location and joined another gym.

A Cancellation Should Produce a Record the Member Controls

Planet Fitness says memberships may generally be ended through the online member portal, by mailing written notice to the home club, or by visiting the club in person. Procedures can vary by location and local rules.

The company says cancellation notice must ordinarily reach the club by the 10th of the month to stop the next monthly charge on the 17th. To avoid an upcoming annual fee, notice generally must arrive by the 25th of the preceding month.

A member canceling in person should read the document before signing it, keep a completed copy, and confirm that the effective cancellation date appears correctly. An online cancellation should be followed by saving the confirmation page and email.

Members Can Check the Balance Before Paying at the Desk

Planet Fitness says members can review billing details through the My Billing Info & Balance section of its website or mobile app. The account page also allows members to update payment information and make payments.

Planet Fitness directs billing questions to the member’s home club. When the home club is closed or the issue remains unresolved, its customer-service page also provides access to the company’s member-services department.

Paying the balance before obtaining an explanation could make the charge harder to reconstruct later. The member should request the dates, amounts, descriptions, and reason for each fee in writing and keep copies of any emails or account messages.
