Reese Witherspoon is reportedly learning German as her relationship with financier Oliver Haarmann approaches the two-year mark.
AOL, republishing a RadarOnline report, cited an unnamed insider who claimed the actress wants to communicate more closely with Haarmann’s family and understand another part of his life.
Witherspoon and Haarmann made their first major event appearance together at the June 23 premiere of Elle, Prime Video’s Legally Blonde prequel series.
Witherspoon Is Reportedly Learning Haarmann’s Native Language
The RadarOnline source presented Witherspoon’s reported interest in German as evidence that the relationship has become increasingly serious.
Haarmann is a German financier and founding partner of Searchlight Capital Partners, a private investment firm he established with Eric Zinterhofer and Erol Uzumeri in 2010. He previously spent 12 years at KKR and helped develop the firm’s European operations.
According to the report, Haarmann appreciates Witherspoon’s willingness to learn his native language and views the effort as a sign that she wants to connect more deeply with his background and family.
They Made Their Public Debut at the ‘Elle’ Premiere

Witherspoon and Haarmann attended the New York City premiere of Elle together on June 23, marking their first major public appearance as a couple. The actress wore a bright pink lace dress inspired by the signature color associated with Elle Woods. Haarmann coordinated with her in a navy suit, white shirt and pink tie.
The couple posed together and were photographed holding hands away from the carpet. Witherspoon attended as an executive producer of the series, which follows Elle Woods during her high school years before the events of the original 2001 movie.
A source told PEOPLE that Witherspoon and Haarmann remain protective of their personal lives despite attending the premiere together. “They are very committed to each other and supportive of each other,” the source said, adding that they prefer evenings at home and small dinners with friends to highly public outings.
Witherspoon and Haarmann Have Dated Since 2024
The couple was first linked in July 2024 after they were photographed dining at L’Artusi in New York City. PEOPLE confirmed that September that they were dating, although sources initially said Witherspoon was taking the relationship slowly.
They continued making occasional appearances without formally stepping onto a red carpet together. In July 2025, they were photographed showing affection during a yacht vacation near Saint-Tropez.
The source who spoke to PEOPLE after the Elle premiere said Witherspoon and Haarmann had also been meeting each other’s friends and relatives during the preceding months.
The relationship is Witherspoon’s first publicly known romance since her divorce from talent agent Jim Toth was finalized in August 2023. She and Toth share son Tennessee, while Witherspoon has daughter Ava and son Deacon with her first husband, Ryan Phillippe.
