Rhea Seehorn nearly talked herself out of becoming Bob Odenkirk and Patrick Fabian’s roommate during Better Call Saul. She liked both actors and worried that sharing a home could damage friendships that were working perfectly well on set.
She revisited the arrangement on the November 3 episode of Dinner’s on Me with Jesse Tyler Ferguson. Recorded at Picala in Los Angeles, the conversation also covered her career and her subsequent work with Better Call Saul cocreator Vince Gilligan on Pluribus.
On the AMC drama, Seehorn played attorney Kim Wexler opposite Odenkirk’s Jimmy McGill and Fabian’s Howard Hamlin. Their work brought them to Albuquerque, New Mexico, for extended periods away from their families.
Odenkirk and Fabian began sharing a home during the second season. Seehorn joined them for Season 4, as Entertainment Weekly noted in its November 6 coverage.
Private Bedrooms and Bathrooms Helped the Arrangement Work
Their partners supported the idea, but the actors needed privacy as well as company. Seehorn described the three as “50 percent extrovert, 50 percent introvert.” They chose houses with bedrooms and attached bathrooms away from the communal space.
Some days brought little more than coffee together or a call from Whole Foods asking whether anyone needed groceries. Seehorn and Odenkirk watched PEN15, and she enjoyed having company for a Sunday documentary.
Rehearsals Could Continue at 2 or 4 in the Morning
The household also provided rehearsal partners after late finishes on set. Seehorn recalled working through dialogue at 2 or 4 a.m., with the actors helping each other even when they weren’t in the same scene.
“You basically need to hide in your room if you don’t want to run lines,” she told Awards Focus in a 2020 interview. If Fabian needed to practice a scene with another character, Seehorn would read that person’s dialogue rather than limit herself to Kim’s part.
She explained that memorizing the words while sitting still wasn’t enough. Moving around a set, following the blocking or reacting to another actor’s choices could suddenly make familiar dialogue disappear. With a demanding shooting schedule, she wanted the lines firmly in place before cameras rolled so she could concentrate on the performance.
That preparation extended beyond the house. For a complicated Season 5 scene with Odenkirk and Tony Dalton, the actors rehearsed on set with writer-director Thomas Schnauz and the camera and lighting teams. Working out the movements and technical requirements beforehand preserved more of the filming day for the scene itself.
Seehorn Was Sharing Roommate Stories Before the Series Ended
Seehorn discussed the shared home during a July 2022 appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, while Better Call Saul was airing its final season. The roommates’ lives together had included considerably more than television and scripts.
In a separate interview that month with Vanity Fair, she remembered helping deliver puppies after Odenkirk brought home a stray dog and protecting a hummingbird nest from roadrunners. Their shared viewing also included Wild Wild Country, which had them shouting at the television.
Fabian offered his own recollection to AMC in May 2022. During their first boardroom scene, he and Seehorn were only beginning to become friends, and neither felt certain the job would last. With Gilligan directing, they both assumed they would be fired by the end of the day. That worry continued from week to week before they realized they had become part of a six-season series.
