Rob Kazinsky is returning to EastEnders as a full-time cast member, putting Sean Slater back in Albert Square 17 years after the character last lived there permanently.
The BBC soap confirmed that Sean will return later in 2026 for his family, although the reason for his homecoming is being kept secret. Kazinsky has already shared a photograph from the set and warned that his volatile character may start a few “proverbial fires.”
“I’m home, and I can’t wait to bring a new level of heartfelt chaos to Albert Square in the way only Sean Slater can,” Kazinsky said in the return announcement.
Some viewers have connected Sean’s return to reports that Zoe Slater could be killed off following Michelle Ryan’s departure. The BBC has confirmed that Zoe will leave the show later this year, but it has not confirmed her death, a funeral or any connection between her exit and Sean’s full-time comeback.

Kazinsky first appeared as Sean in August 2006 and remained a regular until his New Year’s Day 2009 exit. Reflecting on the years since his original run, the actor said he had continued championing EastEnders while building a career around the world and always hoped to explore Sean again at a different stage of life.
“I left EastEnders in 2008 as a 23-year-old boy,” Kazinsky said, according to the Press Association report. He said he wanted to return to Sean’s shoes “this time as a man” and discover who the older version of the character might be. Kazinsky said he wanted the comeback for Sean, for the fans who continued supporting him after he left Walford and, “mostly,” for himself.
Executive producer Ben Wadey welcomed the full-time return while offering little about the storyline that will bring Sean back. “Sean Slater was a big part of the Slater family and as viewers will already know, where Sean goes, drama is not far behind,” he said.
Kazinsky Teased ‘Proverbial Fires’ From the EastEnders Set

Following the announcement, Kazinsky posted a selfie beside an EastEnders sign at the show’s production base. “Interesting place you got here,” he wrote while tagging the official EastEnders account, before joking that it would be a shame if someone arrived and “set a few proverbial fires like it’s 2006 or somethin.”
The teasing fits a character whose original run was built around volatile relationships and confrontations. Sean married Roxy Mitchell in 2008, only to discover that Jack Branning, not Sean, was the biological father of her daughter Amy. The fallout led into Sean’s dramatic departure on New Year’s Day 2009.
Kazinsky went on to build a career outside the soap with roles in True Blood, Pacific Rim, Warcraft, Captain Marvel, Second Chance and Star Trek: Section 31. He nevertheless remained willing to revisit Sean. In 2021, Kazinsky explained that because he lived in Los Angeles, he had offered to film a Sean scene whenever he happened to be visiting Britain and the production could make it work.
The Zoe Slater Funeral Theory Has Not Been Confirmed
A Mirror report highlighted viewer theories that Sean could be coming back because of reports Zoe will die and receive a funeral. The broadcaster has announced that Ryan will leave EastEnders later in 2026, approximately a year after returning as Zoe following a two-decade absence.
“We can confirm Zoe Slater will be departing EastEnders later this year,” a spokesperson told Radio Times. “However, we never comment on future storylines as we don’t want to spoil it for the viewers.”
Kazinsky Was Suspended for Two Months During His Original Run
Kazinsky’s first stint on EastEnders also included a period away from the soap. In January 2007, the BBC announced that he would be suspended for two months following newspaper allegations that he had sent obscene messages and photographs to a model.
An EastEnders spokesperson said Kazinsky apologized for any offense caused to viewers and for bringing the show into disrepute, according to contemporary coverage. He continued filming temporarily before the two-month suspension took effect.
Sean’s later 2019 return gave Kazinsky substantially different material, bringing him back during Jean Slater’s cancer storyline while also confronting Sean’s own severe mental health crisis. His subsequent appearances kept the character connected to the family without returning him permanently to Walford.
That changes later this year. The BBC has confirmed Sean is moving back to Albert Square as a regular, but it has not yet announced his first episode or revealed exactly what family situation will bring him home.
