Rosie O’Donnell is sharing more about the emotional prison visit that changed the way she sees her relationship with her daughter Chelsea.

People reported that O’Donnell said the June visit marked the first conversation she had with Chelsea in 10 years that lasted longer than 25 minutes. E! News also covered the interview, which O’Donnell originally gave to Page Six.

For O’Donnell, the four-hour visit offered something she said had been missing for years.

O’Donnell Said She Saw New Empathy in Chelsea

O’Donnell said she spent four hours speaking with Chelsea during the Wisconsin prison visit. She described it as the first time in years that she saw her daughter in a steady, emotionally present way.

“The first time that I saw her in a consistent way was the four hours in the prison,” O’Donnell told Page Six, according to People.

The visit ended earlier than expected because of a tornado warning in the area. O’Donnell said Chelsea cried when they had to say goodbye, a reaction the comedian described as an important emotional shift in their relationship.

“That’s the first time I’ve seen, kind of, an empathetic emotion from her,” O’Donnell said.

She also said Chelsea has been sober for nearly two years, which has given her hope. O’Donnell said she wants her daughter’s future to be brighter than the difficult decade that came before this moment.

Their Relationship Has Been Publicly Complicated

O’Donnell and her former wife Kelli Carpenter adopted Chelsea as a baby. Their relationship later became strained, including a 2015 period when Chelsea left home as a teenager and was later found in New Jersey.

People reported that Chelsea was sentenced to prison after her probation was revoked in October 2025. The outlet said the legal situation followed earlier arrests and guilty pleas connected to felony bail jumping, possession of methamphetamine and resisting or obstructing an officer.

Rosie Previously Wrote About the Visit in a Poem

Before this new interview, O’Donnell had already reflected on the prison visit in a poem and a photo shared on Instagram. In that earlier post, she wrote about preparing herself for the meeting and feeling proud that both she and Chelsea faced it.

Entertainment Weekly reported that O’Donnell described the prison setting in detail, including rules about hugs, keeping hands above the table and no loud voices. She also wrote that Chelsea looked healthy, calm and well-rested when she entered the room.

She Plans to Explore Their Story Onstage

O’Donnell said her relationship with Chelsea will be part of her next one-woman show. She also said she has asked Chelsea for input so her daughter’s voice is included, rather than only O’Donnell’s version of the story.

People reported that Chelsea has been calling O’Donnell from prison daily, and that O’Donnell wrote in her poem that they have grown closer through the tense period.
