Shailene Woodley had a chance to respond to Aaron Rodgers’ newly public version of their broken engagement. She chose not to give him one.

The actress was arriving at a pre-Emmys fundraiser in West Hollywood on September 13 when a reporter asked whether she had any comment about Rodgers. A TMZ video shows Woodley stopping, turning toward the question and laughing before continuing inside with a friend.

The question came days after Rodgers discussed their former relationship at length, alleging that Woodley told him shortly after their engagement that she wanted to sleep with another man before they married.

He also challenged the familiar timeline of their breakup, saying the relationship had largely ended well before their split became public in 2022. Woodley did not confirm, deny or otherwise address those claims at the fundraiser.

Woodley Stopped, Turned and Laughed at the Question

The exchange itself lasted only a few seconds. As Woodley approached the venue, a reporter called out, “Any comment about Aaron Rodgers? Anything to say about Aaron and what he said?” She paused, looked back toward the camera and laughed.

The exchange happened as Woodley entered the Motion Picture & Television Fund’s 20th Annual Evening Before at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood, a fundraiser held the night before the Emmys.

The appearance came during a particularly visible stretch for Woodley, who had just won her first Emmy for playing Annie on Hulu’s Paradise. The Rodgers question instead pulled attention back to a relationship whose public breakup dates to 2022.

Rodgers made the allegations during the September 10 installment of Not Just Football With Cam Heyward. He said he proposed in December 2020, before the engagement became public in February 2021, and alleged that Woodley told him only days later that she wanted to sleep with another man before getting married.

He also claimed that Woodley had stopped wearing her engagement ring by March 2021. Rodgers said they later made attempts to reconcile but maintained that she eventually told him she did not want to be with him.

Their split was first reported in February 2022, and they were subsequently seen together again before the engagement was described as definitively over that spring. Rodgers now argues that there was effectively no relationship left in 2022 to end.

He also objected to later descriptions of the emotional aftermath of the relationship and accused former partners of invoking his name publicly while portraying him unfairly. Rodgers has since married Brittani, a woman he says he first met in 2017 before reconnecting with her years later.

Woodley Previously Described 2022 as One of Her Lowest Periods

Woodley has spoken about that chapter of her life. In a 2024 Outside interview, she said a “really awful, traumatic thing” happened in early 2022 and described remaining in a “toxic situation” because of her tendency to empathize with another person.

“I felt like I lost my soul, my self, my happiness, my joy,” she said while describing the period. Woodley also spoke about depression, anxiety and what she called “complete soul detachment,” saying she eventually recognized how low she had become.

Woodley said she had rarely spoken about their relationship because doing so still made her cry, describing it as something that “was not right” but was also “beautiful.”

TMZ reported on September 11, citing sources close to Woodley, that she and Rodgers have not spoken in more than two years and that people in her circle were surprised he was discussing the relationship publicly. One source questioned why a married man was revisiting an ex he had not spoken with in years.
