Tate McRae and New Jersey Devils star Jack Hughes have reportedly ended their relationship after months of public sightings and persistent speculation about their status.
Neither McRae nor Hughes ever personally confirmed that they were a couple, and neither has announced a breakup. However, Page Six reported on August 7th that multiple sources say the singer and NHL player are no longer together.
The outlet received conflicting accounts about who ended the relationship. One source claimed Hughes broke things off after seeing what the source called “red flags,” while sources close to McRae said she was the one who ended it.
Sources Disagree About Who Ended the Relationship
Page Six reported that Hughes has been telling friends he ended the romance before the pair ever had an opportunity to publicly confirm it. One source claimed the 25-year-old hockey player saw “red flags” and decided to end the relationship.
The same source alleged that Hughes has since begun dating other people. Sources close to McRae offered the opposite account, telling the outlet that the 23-year-old singer was the one who “pulled the plug.”
McRae Had Just Spoken About Keeping Relationships Private
Days before the breakup report, McRae discussed how deliberately she tries to separate her relationships from her public life. “I try to keep my relationships as sacred and private as possible,” she told Variety in an interview published August 3rd, according to Us Weekly.
“I love the people in my life. They love me. You just try to keep that circle as positive and supportive as possible,” she said. “And the outside noise, I can’t do anything about that. Focusing my energy on something that I can’t control, it just puts me in a bad mood.”
They Were First Linked After a New York Dinner
The dating speculation began in November 2025 when McRae and Hughes were spotted dining together at Anton’s in New York City’s West Village. Their connection became considerably more visible the following month.
McRae attended a New Jersey Devils game at Newark’s Prudential Center on December 21st, when Hughes returned to the lineup following a hand injury. The next day, she and Hughes were photographed walking together in Manhattan, smiling and laughing as they made their way through the city.
At the time, PEOPLE reported that Hughes’ representative declined to comment, while McRae’s representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
A Source Said They Were ‘Exclusively’ Dating by March
By March, anonymous-source reporting had become more specific. Us Weekly reported on March 4th that McRae and Hughes were “exclusively seeing each other.”
“Tate and Jack are dating,” a source told the outlet. “They started casually seeing each other late last year, so it’s still new, but they are exclusively seeing each other.” The source also claimed that Hughes initiated their connection by messaging McRae on Instagram.
According to that account, McRae enjoyed attending his games and supporting his hockey career, while the pair were trying to make the relationship work around their respective schedules. Hughes’ public profile had risen dramatically by then after he scored the overtime winner that gave Team USA the men’s hockey gold medal against Canada at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
