Taylor Swift made an unannounced appearance during Dakota Johnson’s Saturday Night Live monologue on Oct. 3, walking onto the Studio 8H stage while Johnson was mining her dating history for jokes.
Johnson introduced her friend to the audience as “my literal therapist,” only for Swift to reject the job title. According to Page Six, Swift described Johnson arriving at her house once a week with an empty wine bottle before settling onto the couch to overshare.
Swift said her contribution to these visits sometimes amounted to “Damn, that’s crazy.” When Johnson suggested that qualified as therapy, Swift explained that the night usually ends with a Pedialyte and a ride home from her security team rather than the sleepover Johnson requests.
The episode marked Johnson’s third turn as SNL host, with Turnstile serving as musical guest. Her 37th birthday began at midnight during the live broadcast, a detail Johnson had already worked into the opening monologue. NBC also confirmed Swift’s surprise appearance among the night’s highlights.

Johnson told the audience that since her previous hosting appearance in January 2024, she had gone through “two very public” breakups with two musicians she still described as “awesome.” She then joked that while other people leave concerts with merchandise, she tends to leave with a relationship.
The bit expanded into Johnson presenting her dating choices as a service to other women, joking that she was saving them money on antidepressants by getting involved with the musicians herself. Her list of supposed beneficiaries moved through America, England and parts of Ireland before reaching Cleveland.
Swift reacted to the Ohio reference from beside her. Johnson added “allegedly,” while Swift gave Cleveland a brief cheer, a nod to husband Travis Kelce’s Ohio roots. Entertainment Weekly also noted the Cleveland exchange in its recap of the episode.

Six days before the SNL appearance, Johnson joined Swift at the Sept. 27 MTV Video Music Awards, where she presented her friend with the inaugural Artist Director Honors award. Johnson praised Swift’s work behind the camera before Swift premiered her self-directed “Patient Zero” music video during the ceremony. Vogue covered Johnson’s presentation and the video’s premiere.
Johnson stars opposite Colin Farrell in the video, playing a woman whose troubled relationship begins to mirror what Swift’s character experienced with the same man. Swift appears as his deceased former partner, while Cara Delevingne also makes a cameo. Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki shot the video.
Swift thanked Johnson after the premiere for trusting her with the project and joked about the pair spending much of the shoot “twinning” in matching looks. Rolling Stone described the finished video as a thriller built around the two women recognizing the same destructive relationship pattern.
Swift Came Back With a Birthday Cake at the Goodnights
Swift remained at Studio 8H through the end of the episode and reappeared during the cast goodnights. After Johnson thanked Turnstile, the cast and the audience, Swift walked onto the stage carrying a large birthday cake for her.
Johnson accepted the cake before embracing Swift as the cast gathered around them. Her Oct. 4 birthday had arrived during the broadcast, turning the final appearance into an actual birthday surprise rather than another part of the monologue.
