Taylor Swift was not sitting inside Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater when the 2026 Emmys began, but she still managed to appear on two major television broadcasts on the same night.
The singer was at Arrowhead Stadium on Sept. 14 for the Kansas City Chiefs’ season opener against the Denver Broncos, where cameras caught her talking with Tom Cruise in a suite. It was the first time Swift had watched husband Travis Kelce play since the couple married in July, according to Rolling Stone.
At almost the same time, a prerecorded Swift appearance was airing during the Emmy Awards. She joined host Mariska Hargitay and the Law & Order: SVU cast for a sketch built around the question of whether Swift would actually attend the ceremony, even though she was already hundreds of miles away in Kansas City.
Swift had a reason to be part of Emmy night beyond the joke. Taylor Swift, The Eras Tour, The Final Show received five nominations this year, although all five categories had already been decided at the Creative Arts Emmys before Monday’s main ceremony.
Swift Returned to Arrowhead With Tom Cruise Beside Her
ESPN cameras found Swift and Cruise talking near the end of the first quarter as Kansas City opened its 2026 season at home. Swift wore a red-and-white checkered top and had a drink in hand while speaking with the Mission: Impossible star. PEOPLE reported that Kelce’s mother, Donna, and members of Swift’s family were also among those watching from the suite.
Cruise’s appearance was not the first time he had crossed paths with Swift and Kelce. He was among the guests at their July 3 wedding at Madison Square Garden and had previously attended Swift’s Eras Tour show at Wembley Stadium in London.
The game was Swift’s first opportunity to watch Kelce compete as her husband. She had become a regular presence at Chiefs games after attending her first one at Arrowhead in September 2023, months after Kelce publicly discussed trying to give her a friendship bracelet at an Eras Tour concert. Swift kept a noticeably lower profile at games during parts of the 2025 season.
Swift Still Appeared at the Emmys Without Attending the Ceremony

Swift’s absence from the Emmy audience became part of the show itself. Hargitay appeared as Olivia Benson alongside members of the SVU squad as they tried to solve the night’s supposed mystery, whether Swift would turn up at the Emmys. The sketch leaned into the way fans analyze numbers, colors and other details for clues about Swift’s plans.
The investigation eventually produced its biggest surprise when Swift herself appeared as a rookie detective. Her character questioned whether everything they had identified was actually a clue. Swift’s cat Olivia Benson, named after Hargitay’s character, also appeared.
Hargitay and Swift have known each other for years, and Hargitay previously appeared in Swift’s 2015 “Bad Blood” music video. The prerecorded segment meant Swift could appear on NBC during the Emmys while she was physically inside Arrowhead Stadium watching Kelce. The Associated Press confirmed that Swift attended the game.
Her Five Emmy Nominations Had Already Been Decided
The Eras Tour, The Final Show received five nominations, but they were all Creative Arts Emmy categories that had already been presented earlier in September. Entertainment Weekly reported that the concert film did not win in any of the five.
The nominations covered Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded), directing, picture editing, sound mixing and technical direction and camerawork. The Television Academy lists Swift herself among the nominees for Outstanding Variety Special as a producer and performer.
The Muppet Show ultimately won Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded), meaning one of Swift’s most prominent categories had been settled well before she arrived at Arrowhead.
The nominations were still significant for Swift. Her previous Emmy recognition came in 2015, when AMEX Unstaged: Taylor Swift Experience won Outstanding Creative Achievement in Interactive Media.
The Night Was Also Kelce’s First Regular-Season Game as a Husband

Kelce began his 14th NFL season Monday after spending much of the offseason facing questions about how long he intends to continue playing. He recently told ESPN’s Chris Berman that he still has the desire to compete and wants to continue playing while he believes he can perform at a high level.
Kelce has also begun speaking more openly about the July ceremony. He recently described marrying Swift as more than he could have imagined and called the wedding the best night of his life.
The couple married at Madison Square Garden on July 3 after becoming engaged in 2025. Cruise was one of many recognizable guests at the ceremony.
