Taylor Swift turned an 8-year-old fan’s paper airplane song request into a much bigger surprise.
The story began in Ohio, where a girl named Madeline heard her neighbor, musician Ethan Hayes, playing guitar outside and found a shy way to ask for a song. Instead of walking over, she wrote a note, folded it into a paper airplane, and sent it over the fence.
PEOPLE reported that the request eventually reached Swift, who sent signed guitars and a handwritten note after the video spread online.
The Song Request Started With a Paper Airplane
@poziwibe A shy song request, a backyard performance, and a Taylor Swift surprise. In Ohio, 8-year-old Madeline sent her neighbor Ethan a paper airplane asking for “Love Story.” The video took off, reached Taylor, and ended with signed guitars for both of them. ✈️🎸💛 #TaylorSwift #LoveStory #ViralMoment #Poziwibe ♬ Love Story (Taylor’s Version) – Taylor Swift
Madeline was doing homework when she heard Hayes playing guitar on his porch. PEOPLE reported that she wanted him to play a Taylor Swift song, but felt too shy to approach him directly and did not want to trespass.
With help from her mom, Natalie Hulec, Madeline sent the request by paper airplane. Hayes did not see it land at first, but Madeline’s stepfather got his attention, and the musician went over to read the note.
Hayes Played “Love Story” From His Porch
Hayes, a full-time musician, told PEOPLE he was not a die-hard Swiftie, but he knew enough of “Love Story” to make the moment work. He picked up his guitar and played the 2008 hit while Madeline sang along from her side of the fence.
The charm of the clip was simple: a child with a song request, a neighbor willing to play along, and a Taylor Swift classic drifting across the fence.
The Video Reached Millions of Viewers
Natalie recorded the exchange and later posted it to TikTok, where the video quickly took off. Entertainment Weekly reported that the clip was first posted on April 23 and had nearly half a million likes after spreading online.
PEOPLE reported that the TikTok had more than 3 million views by May 26. Hayes said the attention also boosted his own profile as a musician, bringing him thousands of new followers and a wave of unusually positive comments.
Swift Sent Signed Guitars and a Handwritten Note
The story grew again when Swift’s team reached out to Hayes on social media. Hayes told PEOPLE that he expected maybe a signed poster, but Swift sent signed guitars to both him and Madeline.
Madeline also received a handwritten note from Swift. Page Six reported that Swift said the video brought the “biggest smile” to her face and encouraged Madeline to learn guitar if she wanted to.
Madeline Had a One-Word Response
After the video, the gifts, and the sudden attention, Madeline’s response to Swift was simple. When PEOPLE asked what she wanted to say to the superstar, the 8-year-old answered, “Thank you.”
The story did not need much more than that. It started with a child who loved a song, a neighbor who played it, and a paper airplane that somehow carried the request all the way to Taylor Swift.
