Jesús de Miguel Alameda, the striker whose 11 league goals helped CD Tenerife win promotion last season, died at 30 on Tuesday, November 3. He suffered a cardiac arrest after colliding with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during Monday’s Spanish second-division match.

The teams were tied 2-2 at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López stadium in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Andorra had come back from two goals down, equalizing with a header shortly before the game went into stoppage time.

Fans left flowers and candles outside Gate 9 of Tenerife’s stadium on Tuesday. De Miguel’s family thanked supporters for their messages and asked for privacy, the club said.

Spain’s National Police said they had opened an investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter and that prosecutors would also be involved, according to The Associated Press.

Players Call for Medical Help After the Midfield Collision

Owono ran out of his penalty area to challenge for a long ball near midfield. His knee struck De Miguel in the chest, and the referee showed the goalkeeper a straight red card. Players from both teams waved medical staff onto the field, according to Reuters.

With two minutes left to play, the captains told the referee their teams were in no state to continue. The officials and both teams agreed to suspend the match.

Tenerife said medics restored De Miguel’s pulse in the ambulance on the way to Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria. The club initially described him as stable in intensive care despite the seriousness of his condition. An overnight update said his neurological condition had worsened. He died at 8 a.m.

Andorra Sends Condolences to De Miguel’s Family and Teammates

While De Miguel was in the hospital, FC Andorra published its match report under the headline “The match and the result, the least important.” It opened with a wish for his recovery. The following morning, Andorra offered its condolences, and majority shareholder Gerard Piqué posted a personal message in De Miguel’s memory.

Real Madrid’s players observed a minute of silence before training. At Castellón, where De Miguel had made 88 appearances, the club said his teammates and supporters would remember him as one of their own.

Anaitasuna’s first-round Copa del Rey game against Alavés and Pamplona’s against Eibar were both scheduled for Tuesday. Those men’s fixtures and Celta’s third-round game against Espanyol in the women’s Copa de la Reina were postponed by the Royal Spanish Football Federation.

The federation also canceled a presentation in Almendralejo for Spain’s under-21 match against Japan. All UEFA matches that week would include a moment of silence in De Miguel’s memory, European soccer’s governing body announced.

De Miguel Set a Tenerife Scoring Record in His First Five Games

Born in Madrid, De Miguel began his senior career with Leganés B. He played for Unión Adarve, Navalcarnero and Unionistas de Salamanca before joining Castellón in 2023.

He scored 16 goals in the 2023-24 season to help Castellón win promotion to Spain’s second division. He also recorded six assists in 38 appearances that season, according to CD Castellón.

After moving to Tenerife in the summer of 2025, De Miguel scored twice against Mérida and once each against Pontevedra and Ourense. Two more goals at Real Madrid Castilla gave him six in the opening five league games. No Tenerife player had scored that many at that stage of a season since the club entered national competition in 1953, according to CD Tenerife.
