Timothy Olyphant embraced a dramatically bleached look for his role in Alien: Earth, but his wife, Alexis Knief, was considerably less enthusiastic about one part of the transformation.
During a July 30 appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers, Olyphant revealed that he now applies brow gel when he is away from the set.
The adjustment followed repeated reminders from Knief that his nearly invisible eyebrows were still distracting her whenever they prepared to go out.
The actor did not adopt the solution during the show’s first season. He began using the makeup while filming Season 2 after Knief pointed out that covering the bleached brows was an option.
Knief Kept Returning to the Same Problem

Olyphant told Seth Meyers that he personally enjoys the platinum hair and eyebrows required to play Kirsh, a synthetic employed by the powerful Prodigy Corporation. “I kinda dig it,” he said, comparing the style to Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong’s bleached look.
Knief did not share his enthusiasm. “My wife’s not a huge fan of it,” Olyphant said. “Every time I would get dressed to go out with her, I invariably do that thing that I’ve never stopped doing for 35 years, which is like, ‘Honey, how’s this look?’” he recalled.
Knief’s answer kept returning to one feature. “She would just look at me and go, ‘It’s just the eyebrows,’” Olyphant said. During Season 1, he simply lived with the white brows between filming days. He jokingly apologized to his wife for not finding a solution sooner.
“This year I was like, ‘Oh wait, brow gel,’” he said before acknowledging that the idea may not have been entirely his. “I think actually she said, ‘You know, you could put makeup on.’”
The Bleached Look Helps Separate Kirsh From the Humans
Olyphant plays Kirsh, Prodigy’s synthetic chief scientist and a mentor to the young hybrids known as the Lost Boys. Those characters have human consciousness transferred into artificial bodies. The actor previously explained that he wanted an immediate visual cue distinguishing Kirsh from the human characters before he relied on changes in voice, movement or behavior.
Olyphant initially proposed bleaching his hair during a conversation with series creator Noah Hawley. Hawley supported the idea but argued that the transformation could not stop there. “Once I showed up with the bleached hair, Noah said, ‘You gotta bleach the eyebrows too,’” Olyphant previously told The Playlist.
He considered the eyebrows the more meaningful part of the decision because they made Kirsh appear subtly unnatural even when the character was behaving like an ordinary person. “We knew we needed something economical and superficial to separate him, to say, ‘He’s different,’” Olyphant said.
Knief Objected Before the Series Even Premiered
Olyphant had already discussed his wife’s reaction while promoting the first season in 2025. During an Entertainment Weekly interview at San Diego Comic-Con, Hawley recalled telling Olyphant that the eyebrows needed to match the newly bleached hair. Olyphant responded that his wife “really” did not want him to make that additional change.
Hawley joked at the time that Knief might secretly be hoping the series would not receive a second season because renewing it would require another round of eyebrow bleaching. The show was subsequently renewed, leaving Olyphant to repeat the transformation while Knief introduced the off-camera compromise.
Olyphant Has Embraced Kirsh’s Unusual Behavior
“You’re playing a synthetic, and to some degree, you feel like you gotta do a little something,” Olyphant told Entertainment Weekly. “It’s not just memorize your lines and show up.”
He experimented with the character’s appearance, voice, rhythms and mannerisms while resisting the idea that every synthetic must behave according to the same familiar science-fiction template.
FX’s second season of Alien: Earth is currently in production, and Olyphant will continue bleaching his eyebrows and applying brow gel.
