Tom Cruise has hung off the side of an Airbus A400M, scaled the Burj Khalifa, and driven a motorcycle off a cliff. But for his latest stunt, the 63-year-old action legend traded adrenaline for a camera lens and a pair of very expensive shoes.
In a delightful revelation that has sent Star Wars fans into a tailspin, director Shawn Levy confirmed today that Cruise didn’t just visit the set of the highly anticipated Star Wars: Starfighter. He actually helped film one of its most crucial action sequences.
The anecdote, revealed in a new New York Times profile on Levy, paints a picture of a movie star who simply cannot sit on the sidelines. According to Levy, Cruise arrived at the Pinewood Studios set in typical fashion by helicopter. He was ostensibly there just to say hello. But when he saw the crew preparing for a complex lightsaber duel in a muddy swamp, the Top Gun star couldn’t help himself.
The scene in question involved a lightsaber skirmish set in a waterlogged, marshy environment. This is a location fans are already speculating could be a return to Dagobah or a new planet entirely.
Levy is directing the Ryan Gosling-led film for a May 28, 2027, release. He jokingly suggested that Cruise grab a camera to get a specific angle. To the crew’s shock, Cruise didn’t laugh it off.
“Last week, Steven Spielberg was here. And now Tom Cruise is wielding a camera, ruining his very nice shoes,” Levy told the Times.
According to the report, Cruise waded ankle-deep in “mud and pond water” and completely disregarded his footwear. He operated a handheld digital camera with “great concentration” to capture the choreography up close.
“Now, when you see the movie, you’ll know that part of it was shot by Tom,” Levy added. “I mean, how cool is that?”

The news has instantly gone viral. Fans are delighted by the image of Hollywood’s most intense perfectionist wading into a fake swamp to help out a fellow filmmaker. It also speaks to the high-octane, practical approach Levy is taking with Starfighter.
The film wrapped production in late 2025 and is shaping up to be a gritty, practical effects-heavy entry in the saga. It stars Ryan Gosling as a pilot navigating a lawless galaxy five years after The Rise of Skywalker. The movie promises to bring the dogfighting intensity of Top Gun to the Star Wars universe.
Having the actual Maverick on set, even just as a guest cameraman, feels like a spiritual passing of the torch. While Cruise’s cameo behind the camera is the headline of the day, the Times piece also dropped significant new details about the film itself.
Star Wars: Starfighter is confirmed to be a standalone adventure. This separates it from the “Skywalker Saga” baggage. It centers on Gosling’s character protecting his young nephew (played by newcomer Flynn Gray) as they are hunted by a villain played by Matt Smith.
Levy described the project as a “father-son story” at its core. He admitted he was drawn to the script by his own childhood experiences. “I could never figure out why I kept coming back to these stories of a 13-year-old boy being saved by a man,” Levy said. “And with Star Wars, I’m doing so again.”
The Fan Reaction
Social media has predictably embraced the chaos of “Cameraman Cruise.” Within hours of the story breaking, X (formerly Twitter) was flooded with memes imagining Cruise sprinting across the galaxy to get the perfect shot.
“Tom Cruise doing his own cinematography is the most Tom Cruise thing to happen in 2026,” one viral tweet read. Another user joked, “Does this mean Tom Cruise is technically a Force Ghost now? He was there, but we couldn’t see him.”
Speculation is also rampant that Cruise might have snuck in front of the camera as well. While Levy only confirmed the camera work, in a galaxy of stormtroopers and masked aliens, it wouldn’t be the first time a superstar hid in plain sight.
For now, fans will have to wait until 2027 to scour the credits for “Additional Camera Operator: Thomas Cruise Mapother IV.”
