Anne Hathaway became emotional during an appearance on The View after Whoopi Goldberg paused the interview to recognize how much she had grown as an actress.
Hathaway joined Matt Damon and director Christopher Nolan on the Monday, July 20, episode to discuss The Odyssey.
Damon plays Odysseus in Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s epic, while Hathaway portrays his wife, Penelope.
The conversation shifted from the film when Goldberg addressed Hathaway directly and told her it had been “wonderful” to watch her mature throughout her career.

“Anne Hathaway, it’s been wonderful watching you,” Goldberg said during the interview, according to Entertainment Weekly. “It’s been wonderful watching you grow up,” she continued. “And you have just blossomed, turned into this fabulous actress. Girl!”
The compliment appeared to catch Hathaway off guard. She covered her face with both hands and responded, “No, don’t!” Goldberg continued rather than moving on. “Yes! Yes! You need to know. You need to know,” she said as Hathaway lowered her head and began crying.
The complete July 20 interview is available through ABC’s official The View page.
Hathaway Said She Would Cry Even Without the Pregnancy
Hathaway acknowledged her pregnancy while assuring the panel that Goldberg’s words, not only heightened emotions, had caused the reaction. “I’d be crying even if I wasn’t pregnant right now,” she joked.
Goldberg told her that the praise was “something you need to know and remember.” Hathaway regained her composure and thanked the longtime View moderator. “I don’t even know what to say,” Hathaway responded. “Thank you. You know how I feel about you.”
Goldberg Also Paid Tribute to Matt Damon
Goldberg then turned her attention to Damon, recalling the affection she had felt for him since they first met at the Academy Awards. “I have adored you since the first second I met you, at the Oscars,” she said.
Goldberg explained that members of her family had once lived near Damon’s family and told the actor that he “feels like home.” She thanked him for remaining “upright and great” and consistently delivering strong performances.
She concluded the interview by encouraging the audience to see Nolan’s film. “Do yourselves a favor and go see this movie,” Goldberg said.
Hathaway Had Another Emotional Interview Days Earlier

The Goldberg exchange came four days after Hathaway teared up during a July 16 appearance on Today with her Odyssey costar Tom Holland. Host Craig Melvin surprised her with a baby basket inspired by Nolan’s film.
The gift included a handmade Trojan costume with crocheted armor, a helmet, cape, diaper cover and sandals for her expected child. “When the child comes out, we want the child ready for battle,” Melvin joked while presenting the outfit.
Hathaway fanned her face and asked who had been talented enough to create the pieces. After learning that members of the show’s wardrobe department had helped assemble the gift, she said, “This is appropriately epic. Thank you so much. This is amazing.”
