Prince William and Kate Middleton’s Royal Foundation received £8.7 million from its American affiliate in 2025, providing nearly half of the charity’s income for the year.
The contribution from American Friends of the Royal Foundation accounted for approximately 44 percent of the organization’s reported £19.6 million total income, according to newly filed accounts examined by the Daily Mail.
Royal columnist Richard Eden used the figures to argue that William and Kate had quietly “parked their tanks” on the American philanthropic territory associated with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
American Friends of the Royal Foundation was established in 2011 as a separately governed U.S. nonprofit capable of accepting tax-deductible donations. Although its interests align with the Royal Foundation, the British charity’s previous accounts have stated that it does not control the American organization.
U.S. Funding Rose to £8.7 Million in 2025
The U.S. affiliate contributed approximately £2.57 million to the Royal Foundation in 2024. The reported £8.7 million contribution for 2025 therefore represented a sharp year-over-year increase. Overall income at the Royal Foundation rose from £12.2 million in 2024 to £19.6 million in 2025.
The latest accounts reportedly show that the organization spent £16.5 million on charitable activities during the year and held £10.6 million across its funds at the end of December. Staff costs reached £6.4 million as its workforce increased from 67 employees to 80.
Charitable expenditure does not refer only to grants distributed to outside organizations. It can also include the cost of designing and operating the foundation’s programs, commissioning research, raising public awareness and coordinating participating groups.
The Foundation Runs Programs on Homelessness, Childhood and Wildlife
The Royal Foundation currently concentrates much of its work on homelessness, early childhood development and combating the illegal wildlife trade. William launched Homewards in 2023 as a five-year initiative intended to demonstrate that homelessness can be prevented.
The program operates across six locations in the United Kingdom, bringing together councils, housing providers, charities and businesses to develop locally tailored plans. Kate’s Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood focuses on how pregnancy and a child’s first five years can affect health, relationships and emotional development throughout life.
The foundation also runs United for Wildlife, which works with financial institutions, transportation companies, governments and law-enforcement bodies to disrupt wildlife-trafficking networks.

Eden promoted his column by claiming that William and Kate had successfully moved into the American charitable territory Harry and Meghan hoped to occupy after leaving royal duties.
William and Harry initially established the organization together, and it was later known as the Royal Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. The couples formally separated their charitable operations in 2019 as their households and professional priorities moved in different directions.
William and Kate continued with the Royal Foundation, while Harry and Meghan established the California-based Archewell Foundation after stepping back as working members of the Royal Family.
Archewell’s Latest Filing Covers 2024, Not 2025
Archewell reported approximately $2.59 million in total revenue for 2024, according to its latest publicly available U.S. tax filing. That revenue consisted of approximately $2.14 million in contributions and $449,768 in investment income.
The organization recorded approximately $5.11 million in expenses and ended the year with $8.26 million in net assets. Its revenue had declined from approximately $5.73 million in 2023, although a nonprofit spending more than it receives during one year can reflect the use of donations accumulated in earlier reporting periods.
Archewell’s filing covers the calendar year ending December 2024 and is reported in U.S. dollars, while the new Royal Foundation accounts cover 2025 and use British pounds. The organizations also allocate money differently. The Royal Foundation operates several large initiatives internally, while Archewell’s charitable work has included grants, partnerships and campaigns delivered with outside organizations.
Earthshot’s Finances Are Reported Separately
Eden also cited the financial performance of the Earthshot Prize, William’s environmental award for projects addressing climate and conservation challenges. Earthshot reported £23.5 million in total income for the financial year ending March 31st, 2024, including £21.4 million in underlying donation income.
Earthshot became an independent charity in 2022 and now publishes separate accounts. Its annual awards provide £1 million to each of five winners. The organization also connects finalists with investors, businesses, philanthropists and technical support intended to help their projects expand.
