Anne Hathaway has answered one of the stranger rumors to emerge from her latest red-carpet appearance. After some social-media users questioned whether her visible baby bump was real, the 43-year-old actress responded with a joke rather than a lengthy explanation.

The speculation followed the August 9 premiere of The End of Oak Street, where Hathaway wore a custom Atelier Prabal Gurung halter top with low-rise jeans that left her stomach exposed. Entertainment Weekly reported that comments questioning the appearance of her bump began circulating alongside red-carpet footage.

Hathaway answered the following day through her own Instagram account. Her caption got directly to the point: “Fake hair, real bump,” while the accompanying video took followers behind the scenes of her preparations for the premiere.

The actress had already publicly announced her pregnancy nearly two months earlier. She and husband Adam Shulman are expecting their third child and are already parents to sons Jonathan, 10, and Jack, 6.

Her Instagram Video Turned the Rumor Into a Joke

Hathaway’s August 10 video followed her from the glam chair to the outdoor premiere. As her team styled her hair into a high ponytail, she mouthed to the camera, “It’s not my hair,” setting up the “Fake hair, real bump” line she used in the caption.

The video also documented some of the less glamorous parts of getting through the outdoor event in hot weather, including a wardrobe mishap when a nipple cover fell from beneath her top during the block party.

E! News also reported on the response, noting that the post arrived after social-media users had questioned whether her visible bump was real.

The Pregnancy Had Been Public Since June

There was no new pregnancy reveal hidden in Hathaway’s response. She announced on June 19 that she and Shulman were expecting another baby, posting a video that showed her cradling her bump while wearing a flowing white dress.

ABC News confirmed the pregnancy with Hathaway’s representative that same day. Hathaway has continued appearing publicly throughout the pregnancy. In July, she attended events surrounding The Odyssey, including its London and New York premieres, while wearing looks that highlighted her growing bump.

At the August 9 The End of Oak Street premiere, she told PEOPLE that experiencing pregnancy in her 40s felt different from her previous pregnancies and that she was trying to be present and enjoy the experience.

Hathaway Has Called Baby No. 3 Her ‘Buzzer-Beater’

Hathaway had already joked about how unexpected the pregnancy was before the fake-bump speculation emerged. During a July appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers, she said she and Shulman were surprised that they were able to expand their family again.

“We knew what we were doing, but we were so shocked it worked,” Hathaway said. “We were so shocked it went this way, so we’re calling this one our buzzer-beater.” She later elaborated during an Access Hollywood interview at The Odyssey New York premiere.

Hathaway said she and Shulman had approached the possibility of another pregnancy with “a very, very healthy, realistic expectation, which was very low.” “We’re overjoyed because we just know from personal experience that not everybody gets this, and certainly not when you want it, sometimes not ever,” she said.
