Anne Hathaway turned a maternity-style debate into a joke after fans and fashion outlets noticed that one of her recent press-tour looks appeared to be worn backwards.

The actress, 43, stepped out in New York City on Tuesday, June 30, while promoting Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film The Odyssey. She wore a red peplum jumpsuit that showed off her baby bump, accessorizing the look with a gold necklace and dark sunglasses, according to PEOPLE.

The outfit quickly became a talking point because the runway version appeared to be styled the other way around. Instead of ignoring the chatter, Hathaway posted a short Instagram Reel on Wednesday, July 1, reacting to the headlines.

In the clip, Hathaway appeared in another red look as screenshots of articles about the outfit flashed across the screen. “I did? I did … I did,” she said, according to PEOPLE.

The post showed headlines about the red maternity look before cutting to Hathaway’s reaction, which made the moment feel more like a wink than a defensive explanation.

E! News also reported that Hathaway laughed off the apparent wardrobe mix-up, noting that she responded to the backwards-outfit claims directly in the Reel.

PEOPLE reported that fans praised Hathaway in the comments for owning the moment. One commenter wrote, “Backward is the new forward,” while another said, “As long as you were comfortable it doesn’t matter!!”

The Red Jumpsuit Came From Ashlyn’s Spring 2026 Collection

The red peplum look came from Ashlyn’s Spring/Summer 2026 collection, according to PEOPLE, which cited Hathaway’s stylist Erin Walsh. On the runway, the piece appeared with the high neckline in front, indicating that Hathaway wore it with the scooped side facing forward during her New York appearance.

Vogue noted that the jumpsuit was not explicitly designed as maternity wear, but that the styling worked with Hathaway’s pregnancy. The outlet described the piece as a red, body-conscious jumpsuit with gathered ankles and a drop-waist peplum.

Vogue also reported that Hathaway wore the look with a Bvlgari Tubogas choker, peep-toe Aquazzura stilettos and matching red pedicure. The outlet said the original design featured a boatneck and scooped back, while Hathaway’s styling gave more space to the necklace.

The Look Followed Her Pregnancy Announcement

Hathaway announced on Friday, June 19, that she and husband Adam Shulman are expecting their third child. PEOPLE reported that she shared the news in an Instagram video set to Barbara Lewis’ “Baby I’m Yours,” wearing a flowing white dress before revealing her baby bump.

“x Baby, I’m yours x,” Hathaway captioned the pregnancy announcement.

Hathaway and Shulman are already parents to sons Jonathan, 10, and Jack, 6. PEOPLE reported that a source said Hathaway is focused on family as she prepares to become a mother of three, while also promoting The Odyssey and preparing for the release of Verity.

PEOPLE reported that Hathaway began The Odyssey press tour in New York the previous day wearing an all-black outfit with black-and-white L’Agence heels and a Dior bag, while holding a copy of Sarah J. Maas’ Crescent City.
