Hopkins shared the photo on Instagram before England faced Mexico at the World Cup. Nation.Cymru reported that he wore England’s shirt while Arroyave wore Mexico’s green kit.

Hopkins is not English. He was born in Port Talbot and remains one of Wales’ most celebrated actors. He has spent decades as one of the most respected actors in the world, with roles in The Silence of the Lambs, The Father and The Remains of the Day

Nation.Cymru noted that Arroyave is Colombian, not Mexican, and that Hopkins did not explain why she chose Mexico’s kit. So, the couple picked opposite sides for a big World Cup fixture.

IBTimes UK reported that some fans questioned why a Welsh icon was wearing England’s shirt, with comments pointing out that he is Welsh rather than English.

England’s Win Kept the Post Circulating

England went on to beat Mexico 3-2 in a last-16 thriller at the Azteca Stadium.

Reuters reported that Jude Bellingham scored twice, Harry Kane added a penalty and England held on after Jarell Quansah was sent off in the second half.

The win sent England into the World Cup quarter-finals against Norway.
