Messi Led Argentina Into the Quarterfinals
Argentina looked close to elimination before producing a stunning late fightback against Egypt.
Reuters reported that Argentina came from 2-0 down with 11 minutes remaining to win 3-2. Messi helped drive the late surge before Enzo Fernández headed in the stoppage-time winner.
PEOPLE reported that Messi scored two key goals in the match and recorded his ninth World Cup assist, adding another milestone to a tournament career that began in 2006.
The Win Set Up a Quarterfinal Against Switzerland
Argentina’s comeback sent the defending champions into the quarterfinals, where they will face Switzerland.
Reuters reported that Switzerland reached its first World Cup quarterfinal in 72 years by beating Colombia on penalties. The matchup also revives a knockout-stage history between Argentina and Switzerland dating back to their 2014 meeting, when Ángel Di María scored the extra-time winner.
Messi acknowledged after the Egypt match that Argentina had suffered again, but said the group never gives up and keeps trying until the end.
The Family Has Been Following Argentina Throughout the Tournament
Roccuzzo has regularly supported Argentina’s World Cup run alongside the couple’s three children.
Throughout the tournament, she has shared photos from the stands, often showing the boys wearing Messi’s No. 10 jersey while cheering on their father.
