Dave Grohl and Jordyn Blum returned to the red carpet together Sunday night, making another rare joint appearance two years after Grohl publicly revealed that he had fathered a daughter outside their marriage. The couple attended the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on September 27, where Grohl was also being honored for his history with Nirvana.
Grohl and Blum coordinated in black for the ceremony. E! News reported that Grohl wore black trousers and a turtleneck under a leather jacket, while Blum chose a black dress with a dramatic bubble skirt and pointed heels.
The couple has remained selective about appearing together publicly since Grohl’s September 2024 announcement. E! counted the VMAs as their fourth red-carpet outing together since that disclosure, while Entertainment Weekly likewise described the ceremony as another uncommon public appearance for the pair.
Grohl and Blum have been married since 2003 and share three daughters, Violet, Harper and Ophelia. They did not use the VMAs carpet to discuss their marriage.

Grohl kept his look close to his usual rock uniform, pairing the leather jacket with an all-black base and glasses. Blum’s dress was more formal, with a fitted upper half and a fuller high-low bubble skirt, and the two stood together for photographers before heading into the ceremony.
The VMAs followed several other public outings during the past year. Grohl and Blum appeared together during Grammy weekend in January, including the MusiCares Person of the Year event and Clive Davis’ pre-Grammy gala, after previously making a joint red-carpet appearance in late 2025.
Nirvana Received the Video Vanguard Award 34 Years After Its First VMAs Performance
Grohl had a separate reason to be at the ceremony. He joined Krist Novoselic and longtime Nirvana guitarist Pat Smear onstage as the band received the 2026 Video Vanguard Award, with Public Enemy’s Chuck D introducing the honor.
MTV’s official announcement noted that the award came 34 years after Nirvana first performed at the VMAs on September 9, 1992. The honor recognized the band’s impact on music, culture and MTV, placing its early-’90s music-video legacy at the center of the tribute.
During the acceptance, Novoselic focused on Kurt Cobain’s creative role in the band’s videos and described him as “one of one.” The Associated Press reported that he said Nirvana’s music continues to connect because listeners are still looking for something authentic and uncompromising.
Entertainment Tonight also reported after the ceremony that he acknowledged crying during the Vanguard tribute, which included archival material connected to Cobain and Nirvana’s best-known videos.
Grohl Said in 2024 He Wanted to Rebuild His Family’s Trust
In September 2024, he announced that he had recently become the father of a daughter born outside his marriage and said he intended to be a loving and supportive parent to the child.
In the same statement, Grohl said he loved Blum and their daughters and was working to regain their trust and earn their forgiveness. He did not publicly identify the younger child’s mother.
Grohl Says His Personal Reassessment Is Still Ongoing
Grohl offered more detail about his own efforts earlier this year in his first major interview since the 2024 disclosure. Speaking to The Guardian in March, he said he had been attending therapy six days a week for 70 weeks, totaling more than 430 sessions at that point, although he stressed that multiple experiences had led him there rather than attributing the process to one event alone.
He said therapy had forced him to stop and reassess himself after reaching a point where he needed to become more communicative and more deliberate about what he was feeling. E! News reported that Grohl described that work as “an ongoing process,” while declining to turn the interview into a public explanation of his marriage.
