Duncan Sheik is receiving medical treatment and remains in “critical but stable condition,” according to a statement shared by his family on Wednesday, September 16.
The 56-year-old singer-songwriter and Tony-winning composer’s family posted the update to his Instagram account and said no additional medical details would be released at this time. They asked for privacy and said further updates would be shared when appropriate, according to PEOPLE.
No diagnosis or cause for Sheik’s condition has been announced. TMZ, citing sources with direct knowledge, reported that he is receiving care at a New York City hospital. His family’s statement confirmed only that he is under medical care.
Sheik had referred to several hospital stays on social media in the weeks before the family update. His hospitalization also comes shortly before the first performances of his new musical Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen, while a new Off-Broadway production of Spring Awakening is scheduled to begin previews in November.

Sheik wrote about being hospitalized several times before his family released Wednesday’s statement. On August 20, he said he would rather be home making music but was finding some value in the time for reflection during what he described as a boring hospital stay.
He returned to the subject on September 6, writing that he was still bored in the hospital. The following day, Sheik posted that he expected to be “out of here in 60 hours,” according to Deadline.
Neither those earlier posts nor the family’s latest statement identified the medical issue for which Sheik is being treated. His family has asked that those details remain private while he continues receiving care.
Two Sheik Musicals Are Scheduled for New York This Fall

Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen, featuring music and lyrics by Sheik and a book by Leah Nanako Winkler, is scheduled to begin Off-Broadway performances September 25 at The Night Egg at Culture Club in Manhattan. Based on Moyoco Anno’s manga, the musical stars Sophia Anne Caruso as Colette and is directed and choreographed by Rob Ashford. Opening night is scheduled for October 15, with the limited engagement currently set to continue through January 3, 2027.
Sheik’s best-known theatrical work is also returning to New York. He wrote the music for Spring Awakening, with Steven Sater providing the book and lyrics. The original Broadway production won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, while Sheik received Tonys for Best Original Score with Sater and Best Orchestrations.
A new production directed by Danya Taymor is scheduled for a 12-week engagement at Studio Seaview. Previews begin November 27, with opening night set for December 17. The production is currently scheduled to run through February 14, 2027.
