Dwayne Johnson made the Los Angeles premiere of Disney’s live-action Moana a full family event, bringing all three of his daughters to the red carpet as he returned to one of his most personal roles.

PEOPLE reported that Johnson attended the July 7 premiere with Simone, 24, Jasmine, 10, and Tiana, 8. His wife, Lauren Hashian, his mother, Ata Johnson, his ex-wife and longtime producing partner Dany Garcia, and Garcia’s husband, Dave Rienzi, also joined him at the event.

Moana has become one of the Disney franchises most closely tied to Johnson’s public image, heritage, and home life.

Jasmine and Tiana wore coordinating blue dresses with large red hibiscus prints and matching hair accessories. Simone, Johnson’s eldest daughter, chose a black midi dress with a slit and black open-toe heels.

Just Jared reported that the premiere took place at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles and also brought out several names tied to the new film, including Catherine Lagaʻaia, Auliʻi Cravalho, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Thomas Kail, John Tui and Frankie Adams.

PEOPLE noted that Jasmine and Tiana also attended the Moana 2 premiere in Hawaii in November 2024, where they wore colorful matching dresses.

Jasmine and Tiana voiced two characters in Moana 2, and Johnson previously said they were thrilled when they heard their cameos in the theater.

Johnson Returns as Maui in the Live-Action Film

Johnson reprises Maui, the demigod he voiced in Disney’s 2016 animated Moana and again in the 2024 sequel. Disney lists the live-action film as a PG-rated action-adventure release arriving in U.S. theaters on July 10, 2026.

The new version stars Catherine Lagaʻaia as Moana and features Johnson, John Tui, Frankie Adams and Rena Owen. Thomas Kail directs, while Johnson is also among the producers, alongside Beau Flynn, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia and Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Entertainment Weekly reported that Johnson is the first Disney actor to play the same role in both an animated film and its live-action counterpart. Johnson also told the outlet that physically playing Maui meant working through heavy prosthetics, hair and a body suit rather than only relying on voice performance.

The Role Has Personal Meaning for Johnson

Johnson has often framed Maui as one of the roles closest to his heritage and family story. In a Fandango interview published by Rotten Tomatoes, Johnson said Maui was inspired by his grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia, and that the character “means so much” to him.

He also said the live-action film’s team was deeply invested in the presentation of Polynesian culture.
