Joe Jonas did not show up at Courtney Smith and Hamilton “Hammy” Morley’s wedding weekend in person, but he still managed to become one of its biggest surprises.

PEOPLE reported that Jonas recorded a funny video message for the couple one day before their New York wedding.

The surprise was played during their June 4 welcome party at Gersi, a Brooklyn restaurant where about 100 friends and family members had gathered to start the wedding weekend.

The Surprise Started With an Offhand Joke

Smith had joked months earlier at work that it would make her wedding if Joe Jonas somehow became part of it. She works at an experiential marketing and production agency, and her colleagues secretly spent months trying to make the idea real.

During the welcome party, guests brought out a TV, and Jonas appeared onscreen with a dramatic opening that played like the start of a mock wedding ceremony.

According to PEOPLE, only a few people involved in organizing the surprise knew what was about to happen.

Jonas began the video by acting as if he were gathering everyone to celebrate Courtney and Hammy. Then he pretended to be shocked by the groom’s nickname, repeatedly asking whether Smith was really marrying someone named Hammy.

Jonas then used the moment to offer what he called “sage advice.” He compared marriage to being in the Jonas Brothers, saying communication matters, matching outfits eventually happen and creative differences should still lead back to an encore.

Jonas also raised a Coors Light in the video and wished Smith and Morley happiness “until the year 3000,” turning one of the Jonas Brothers’ best-known song references into a wedding toast.

The Bride Said the Moment Felt Unreal

Smith told PEOPLE she started crying when she realized Jonas was on the screen.

She said the moment still felt like a “fever dream” and described the surprise as something she would never live down. She also said she was grateful that her colleagues had gone so far out of their way to create the moment.

Smith and Morley married on June 5 at The Liberty Warehouse in Brooklyn after four years together.
