Sean Astin, Elijah Wood, Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd reunited for dinner in Cambridge, Massachusetts, more than two decades after completing Peter Jackson’s original Lord of the Rings trilogy.

The four actors, who played Sam, Frodo, Merry and Pippin, gathered at La Royal restaurant over the weekend and shared photographs from the low-key night out.

Astin posted a photo of the group seated together around an outdoor table and summed up the reunion with four words: “The band’s all here.”

The gathering comes 23 years after The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King concluded the trilogy in 2003 and as Wood prepares to return to Middle-earth as Frodo Baggins in the upcoming The Hunt for Gollum.

In the photograph shared by Astin, all four actors smiled toward the camera while seated outside La Royal in Cambridge. Entertainment Weekly reported that the reunion took place Saturday and described it as an impromptu night out rather than a promotional appearance.

The four actors have remained closely associated with the roles that made up the central hobbit group in Jackson’s trilogy. Wood played Frodo Baggins, Astin portrayed Samwise Gamgee, Monaghan played Meriadoc “Merry” Brandybuck and Boyd appeared as Peregrin “Pippin” Took.

Hours later, Monaghan shared another photograph from the dinner. His selfie included Wood, Astin and Boyd, but a couple seated at a neighboring table also successfully photobombed the picture.

“Four Halflings. Three cocktails. Two desserts. ONE great night of conversation,” Monaghan wrote. “More to come. #becurious.” He also acknowledged the couple behind them, writing, “Shoutout to the couple in the back. Well played,” and thanked La Royal.

The Four Hobbits Last Shared the Screen in 2003

Astin, Wood, Monaghan and Boyd appeared together throughout The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King, released between 2001 and 2003. People noted that the latest dinner came 23 years after the final installment of the trilogy reached theaters.

Wood later made a brief appearance as Frodo in the 2012 prequel The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Monaghan and Boyd have also continued working together outside Middle-earth, including their food and travel series Billy and Dom Eat the World.

Elijah Wood Is Returning as Frodo in ‘The Hunt for Gollum’

The dinner arrives as Wood prepares to reprise Frodo in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. Andy Serkis is directing the film and returning as Gollum. Ian McKellen is also set to reprise Gandalf, while Lee Pace will return as Thranduil. The film is currently in production and is scheduled for theatrical release on December 17, 2027.
