Gracie Abrams says the “nepo baby” label around her career is not something she wants to dismiss.

The singer discussed the subject during an appearance on The New York Times’ Popcast while promoting her upcoming third album, Daughter From Hell. Entertainment Weekly reported that Abrams said the conversation belongs around her career because her family background gave her real advantages.

Abrams, 26, is the daughter of filmmaker J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot Productions CEO Katie McGrath.

People reported that Abrams said people “appropriately” call her a nepo baby and that she understands why her upbringing is part of the discussion.

Abrams Said She Had a Safety Net

Abrams said she grew up with financial security and time to focus on music without the pressure many young artists face.

“The nepo stuff is obviously in the discourse around my music and it’s appropriate,” she said, according to People.

She also said she had “a safety net” and grew up around entertainment-industry language because of her parents’ work. Entertainment Weekly reported that Abrams said that everyday familiarity helped her understand parts of the business earlier than many artists would.

She Said Online Jokes Can Still Sting

Abrams said she understands the internet’s tone around the subject, including jokes about her family name.

People reported that Abrams said some days she can laugh about the online conversation. Other days, she said the repeated negativity can feel personal when her own name is pushed back at her through social media.

She said she feels grateful for the support system around her and described the harsher side of online commentary as difficult to take in.

The Conversation Comes Before Daughter From Hell

Daughter From Hell is scheduled for release on July 17. The album follows Abrams’ 2024 album The Secret of Us.

People reported in a separate interview that Abrams said the title track helped her write about her relationship with her mother. Abrams said she and McGrath are now close, but the song looks back at adolescence, regret and family conflict.

She said the song came from a writing session with Aaron Dessner and brought up feelings she had not expected to put into the album.

Abrams Also Discussed Writing With Paul Mescal

The Popcast interview also covered Abrams’ relationship with actor Paul Mescal and his involvement in the new album.

People reported that Mescal co-wrote the track “Imaginary Friend” with Abrams. Abrams said the collaboration grew out of their home life and the music they share privately.

She also said she does not like the feeling of hiding her relationship, while still trying to keep parts of her personal life private.

She Has Been Releasing New Music Ahead of the Album

Abrams released “Look at My Life” as part of the rollout for Daughter From Hell. The Popcast episode also discussed the single, her new album, internet criticism, and her time opening for Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo.

Entertainment Weekly reported that Abrams said the nepotism conversation is fair, while also speaking about the work she has put into her music.

Daughter From Hell arrives July 17.
