Michael Mann, the 83-year-old filmmaker behind Heat, accidentally shot himself in the leg at a Los Angeles gun range on Saturday, October 31. He was taken to a local hospital by ambulance.
His representative described the wound as a “superficial injury” in a statement provided to People on Sunday. “He was treated and is being released,” the spokesperson said.
TMZ, which first reported the incident, identified the location as The Range LA. Mann has practiced target shooting for decades, according to the Associated Press.
Mann’s directing career spans more than four decades, with credits including Thief, The Insider and Collateral. His most recent feature was the 2023 drama Ferrari, starring Adam Driver.
Police Responded to a Shots-Fired Call
The Los Angeles Police Department told People that officers were dispatched to the 11000 block of Missouri Avenue at approximately 4 p.m. after receiving a report of shots fired. Los Angeles Fire Department personnel also responded, TMZ reported.
The LAPD described the injured person as being in stable condition and said an injury report was completed. Its statement did not identify Mann by name.
A source told TMZ that Mann was apparently trying to holster the weapon when it discharged. His representative said the firearm went off while holstered.
Stephen Graham Had Already Pointed to a January Shoot
During an October 22 appearance on NBC’s Today, Stephen Graham said he believed Heat 2 would begin filming in January 2027, according to Entertainment Weekly. His comments preceded Mann’s injury.
Graham is set to play Neil McCauley, De Niro’s character from the original. EW reported that Leonardo DiCaprio would take over Kilmer’s role as Chris Shiherlis, while Christian Bale would play Pacino’s detective, Vincent Hanna.
The screenplay adapts the 2022 novel Mann co-wrote with Meg Gardiner. As TheWrap reported, the story functions as both a prequel and a sequel, following events before and after the original film.
Mann discussed the preparation at Beyond Fest on October 3, where he presented a new cut of Miami Vice. “It wakes you up at three in the morning because you worry on something that you didn’t get done the day before,” he said, according to The Playlist.
