John Stamos says Mike Love is facing “serious health challenges” as the Beach Boys cofounder returns to performing after months of disrupted tour dates.
The actor shared the update on October 11 in an Instagram post published jointly with Love, PEOPLE reported.
Stamos was heading to Nashville to join the band at the Ryman Auditorium when he wrote the message about the 85-year-old singer.
Stamos did not identify the medical condition behind Love’s current health challenges.

“Despite doctors, family and friends urging him to focus on his health, he insists on being on stage,” Stamos wrote. According to Stamos, Love feels that having his fellow musicians, friends and fans around him helps lift his spirits.
Stamos also acknowledged how deeply it had affected him to see someone he had long regarded as larger than life confronting illness. “We don’t know what the future holds. We have tonight,” he wrote.
He said he wanted to be fully present for the performance, listening to the harmonies, familiar jokes and cheers from the audience.
Bandmates Took Lead Vocals During the Cincinnati Show
The Beach Boys played Cincinnati’s PNC Pavilion on October 10, their first public concert since July. Rolling Stone reported that Love was helped onto the stage and remained seated throughout the performance.
Guitarist Brian Eichenberger sang lead on the opening number, “Do It Again,” which Love usually handles. Christian Love, Mike’s son and a longtime member of the touring band, took the lead on “Surfin’ Safari.”
Other band members continued sharing lead vocals as Love contributed backing vocals at points. He also thanked the audience after the first song.
Before the music began, Stamos addressed the crowd about Love’s health and asked the audience to support him. The band’s Nashville concert went ahead the following night, Press Association reported.
Cancellations Delayed the Band’s Return
In July, the band announced a break with plans to resume touring in September. When that month arrived, venues notified ticket holders that the scheduled performances would not proceed.
Love appeared at a private Beach Boys engagement on October 3 at the Waldorf Astoria Monarch Beach in Dana Point, California. Rolling Stone reported that photographs and footage from that event also showed him performing seated.
An October 9 concert at Grossinger Motors Arena in Bloomington, Illinois, was canceled three days before it was due to take place.

In a June 15 Instagram message, posted after a performance in London’s Chelsea neighborhood, Love said he was recovering from bronchitis followed by COVID-19.
He also wrote about the death of his sister, Maureen, on June 11, 2026, the first anniversary of their cousin Brian Wilson’s death. “I feel stronger every day physically, but I am heartbroken emotionally,” Love wrote at the time, thanking fans for their messages and prayers.
Love Officiated Stamos’ Wedding After Decades of Playing Together
Stamos began performing with the Beach Boys in 1985. In his latest post, he looked back on 41 years of concerts, flights, hotel stays and private moments with Love, whom he described as a father figure and mentor.
He credited Love with teaching him how to hold a stage, connect with an audience and make people feel something through a performance. Stamos said he carried those lessons into his work beyond the band.
Love became ordained so he could officiate Stamos’ 2018 wedding to Caitlin McHugh. Their friendship has since extended to another generation, with Love sharing time and experiences with the couple’s son, Billy.
