Keke Palmer had a job to do at the 2026 Emmy Awards, but when her category arrived, she was nowhere onstage.
The actress had been scheduled to present Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series alongside Saturday Night Live star Marcello Hernández at the September 14 ceremony.
Instead, Hernández walked out alone and handed the Emmy to Widow’s Bay director Hiro Murai, Entertainment Weekly reported. No explanation was given during the telecast.
Palmer had been publicly attached to the ceremony for days. She was also active online shortly before the broadcast, promoting an upcoming episode of her podcast without suggesting that her Emmys plans had changed.
Palmer Was on the Official Presenter List
This was not a case of an unconfirmed appearance that failed to happen. NBC and the Television Academy included Palmer in the first group of presenters announced on September 9, alongside Hernández, Zendaya, Florence Pugh, Amy Poehler and other stars.
The Academy still listed Palmer among the previously announced presenters when it added another group on September 13, one day before the live ceremony. Nothing in either announcement indicated that she had withdrawn.
By the time Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series came up, however, Hernández was by himself. He used the solo stage time for a comedy bit in which he greeted Harrison Ford, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Oscar Isaac and other celebrities in the audience before Murai’s name was announced.
Hernández Carried On Without Explaining the Change
Hernández joked with the room, invited celebrities to dinner at his house and eventually presented Murai with the Emmy for directing the Widow’s Bay premiere, “Welcome to Widow’s Bay!”
The win was Murai’s first directing Emmy and made him the first Asian director to win Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series. The Television Academy has since posted his acceptance from the ceremony.
The lack of an explanation continued after the show. Entertainment Weekly said it contacted representatives for both Palmer and the Emmys, while Just Jared separately reached out to Palmer’s team for more information.
Palmer had posted on Instagram only hours before the broadcast to promote a forthcoming Octavia Spencer interview for Baby, This Is Keke Palmer.
Palmer Already Has Two Primetime Emmy Wins
Her Peacock series The ‘Burbs was represented at the Creative Arts Emmys through Michael Abels’ nomination for Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music, though the category went to Dave Porter for Pluribus.
Palmer herself has two Primetime Emmy wins. She won Outstanding Actress in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series for Keke Palmer’s Turnt Up With the Taylors and later won Outstanding Host for a Game Show for Password.
Her awards season is not over. Glam Through the Ages, the KeyTV series on which Palmer serves as an executive producer, has two nominations at the 53rd Daytime Emmy Awards: Outstanding Daytime Short Form Program and an individual Outstanding Daytime Personality – Non-Daily nomination for Palmer. The Daytime Emmys are scheduled for October 30 at the Hollywood Palladium.
