Malcolm-Jamal Warner had decided that marriage and fatherhood were not part of his future when he met the woman who would become his wife.
About six months later, the late Cosby Show actor surprised Tenisha Warner by asking whether she wanted to start a family.
During an interview with Gayle King on CBS Mornings, Tenisha explained that her husband changed his mind after deciding she was the person he trusted to raise his child, even if their romantic relationship did not last.
The couple eventually married and welcomed a daughter, whom Warner deliberately protected from the public attention surrounding his decades-long acting career.
They Initially Wanted Different Futures
Tenisha said Warner was honest during the early stage of their relationship about not wanting children. Because becoming a mother remained important to her, she understood that their different plans could eventually make them incompatible.
“I thought, if he never wants children, this is not my person,” she recalled. Tenisha did not assume Warner would reconsider or repeatedly pressure him to change his position.
Approximately six months later, Warner approached her with a question she had not expected: “Do you want to start a family?” Tenisha immediately said yes, but she wanted to understand why his thinking had shifted so dramatically.
Warner Trusted Her to Raise His Child

Tenisha said Warner told her that, regardless of what happened between them as a couple, she was the woman he would want raising his child. He believed she would be a strong mother independently of whether their romantic relationship survived, giving him the confidence to reconsider a future he had previously rejected.
Warner offered a similar account during a May 2025 appearance on the Hot & Bothered podcast. He said that after spending several months getting to know Tenisha, he realized that if he ever became a father, she was the person with whom he wanted to take that step.
He also said he never second-guessed the decision once he understood what people meant when they said, “When you know, you know.” The couple married in 2017 and shared a daughter, who was 8 when Warner died and is now 9.
He Kept His Wife and Daughter Out of the Spotlight
Warner grew up in front of millions of television viewers as Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show, but he approached his adult family life very differently. He spoke proudly about his wife and daughter without publicly identifying them.
Warner explained that his family represented the happiest and most important part of his life, but he did not believe their privacy had to be sacrificed because of his profession. Tenisha similarly told CBS that she had never felt comfortable in the spotlight, something Warner appreciated.
He described their relationship as unusually calm and said they had spent nearly a decade together without a major fight, raised voices or deliberately hurtful words. “It’s not like we agree on everything,” he said during the Hot & Bothered interview, crediting their ability to communicate openly and disagree without attacking one another.
Tenisha Is Now Raising Their Daughter Without Him
Warner died at age 54 on July 20, 2025, after being caught in a strong current while vacationing with his family in Costa Rica. Authorities determined that his death was an accidental drowning caused by asphyxiation by submersion. One year later, Tenisha told King that she and their daughter could not simply move on because Warner’s absence continued to shape their daily lives.
Tenisha has also filed legal actions involving Warner’s mother, Pamela Warner, in her capacity as successor trustee of the Warner Family Trust. The filings seek more than $1.2 million and allege that financial obligations contained in a premarital agreement, including a $1 million life-insurance requirement, were not fulfilled.
Tenisha said the emotional energy she has available can sometimes be limited. “Whatever I have to give,” she told King, “the first person to get that is my daughter.”
