Nick Reiner is asking a California probate court to release money from a trust fund established by his parents as he awaits trial in their deaths.

Reiner, 32, is the son of director and actor Rob Reiner and photographer-producer Michele Singer Reiner. He has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and has pleaded not guilty.

According to People, Reiner filed a probate petition on Monday, June 8, seeking access to a trust fund he says contains more than $1.5 million.

The filing says he needs the money for legal fees and basic support while incarcerated.

The Petition Says the Trust Money Was Due When He Turned 30

People reported that the petition describes a separate trust created for Nick Reiner’s individual benefit, similar to trusts established for Rob and Michele Reiner’s other children, Jake and Romy.

The filing claims half of Nick’s trust was supposed to be distributed to him when he turned 30, with the remaining portion set for distribution when he turns 35. He is now 32.

The petition alleges that Reiner has not received the required distribution and has not been told the full value of the trust, which the filing claims is worth more than $1.5 million.

It also claims the trustee has withheld funds over concerns about Reiner’s ability to manage the money. The petition argues those concerns are not enough to block a required distribution.

Reiner Says He Needs the Money for Legal Defense

The petition says Reiner has no other source of funding for private legal counsel or basic necessities while he remains in custody.

People reported that the filing specifically mentions legal expenses and commissary money for items such as socks, soap, and other personal hygiene products.

Former attorney Alan Jackson was initially retained to represent Reiner, with payment negotiated by his siblings on his behalf, according to the filing described by People. Jackson withdrew from the criminal case in January.

Reiner is currently represented by public defender Kimberly Greene. In a declaration filed with the motion, Jackson said he remains “committed to representing” Reiner and would consider reasonable alternatives to the original fee arrangement.

The Murder Case Is Still Pending

Rob and Michele Reiner were found dead inside their Los Angeles home in December 2025.

Reuters reported that Nick Reiner pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Rob, 78, and Michele, 70.

The Guardian reported that he was charged with first-degree murder, with a special circumstance of multiple murders and a special allegation involving the use of a dangerous weapon.

He has been held without bail.

The Trust Filing Keeps the Criminal Allegations Separate

The probate petition does not ask the court to decide what happened to Rob and Michele Reiner.

People reported that the filing states, “The facts about what did and did not happen to them are not at issue in this Trust litigation.”

The petition frames the dispute around whether the trustee can continue withholding money that Reiner claims should already have been distributed under the trust terms.
