Sheryl Lee Ralph arrived at the 2026 Emmys ready to campaign for Abbott Elementary, and she did not bother pretending she viewed every comedy nominee the same way.
Speaking with Justin Sylvester during E!’s red-carpet coverage on September 14, Ralph celebrated Abbott being in the awards conversation before making her prediction. “I’m looking forward to a win since we’re the only real comedy in the category,” she said, according to Us Weekly.
The field included The Bear, Hacks, Margo’s Got Money Troubles, Nobody Wants This, Only Murders in the Building, Shrinking and Widow’s Bay. Ralph’s line landed squarely in a long-running argument over how broadly the Emmys define television comedy.
Her confidence did not produce the result she wanted. Widow’s Bay, Apple TV’s comedy-horror series about a supposedly cursed New England island community, won Outstanding Comedy Series and finished the 2026 Emmy season with a record 14 awards.
Ralph Did Not Back Away When Justin Sylvester Reacted
Sheryl Lee Ralph just called out the Emmys about how Abbott Elementary is the only real comedy in the Best Comedy Category:

Sylvester immediately recognized what Ralph had just said, responding with an audible “ooh” before telling viewers they had heard it there first. Ralph replied with “Yeah, you did”.
Ralph won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 2022 for playing Barbara Howard and was nominated again in 2023, 2024 and 2025. She did not receive an individual Emmy nomination in 2026.
Abbott Elementary still entered this year’s awards with seven nominations. Quinta Brunson was nominated for lead actress and writing in addition to sharing the comedy-series nomination as an executive producer, while Tyler James Williams and Janelle James received supporting acting nominations.
The ‘Real Comedy’ Line Hit an Old Emmy Argument
The official Television Academy field put a traditional network workplace sitcom beside shows with noticeably different tones. The Bear has spent years prompting debate over its comedy classification, while Widow’s Bay deliberately combines comedy with supernatural horror.
Abbott is built around teachers at a Philadelphia public school and still uses the familiar rhythms of a half-hour mockumentary sitcom, even as several of its Emmy competitors push further into drama, romance or genre storytelling.

Widow’s Bay had already collected eight Creative Arts Emmys before the main telecast. It added six more on September 14, including Outstanding Comedy Series, directing for Hiro Murai, writing for Katie Dippold and acting wins for Matthew Rhys, Stephen Root and Kate O’Flynn.
Its 14 total wins set a new single-year Emmy record for a comedy, passing the 13 awards won by The Studio in 2025. Abbott Elementary, meanwhile, remains a four-time Emmy winner across its run and has now been nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series five consecutive times without taking the top prize. ABC’s fall schedule has the series returning Wednesday, October 7, at 8:30 p.m.
