Taylor Swift has written plenty of songs that send listeners searching through her romantic history. With “Pink Clouding,” one name has quickly resurfaced: Tom Hiddleston.
The new track from The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore looks back on a relationship that began while its narrator was still carrying damage from another romance. The song takes responsibility for promises that could not be kept and expresses lingering regret over hurting someone remembered as fundamentally good.
EW is among the outlets highlighting the Hiddleston theory, pointing to parallels with Swift’s 2017 song “Getaway Car,” which fans have long associated with their brief 2016 relationship.
Swift has not identified the person behind “Pink Clouding,” and Hiddleston is not the only ex listeners have discussed. Still, the chronology gives the theory plenty to work with. Swift and Hiddleston became romantically linked shortly after her breakup with Calvin Harris, moved quickly through an intensely public summer together and split about three months later.
The Timing Fits Swift and Hiddleston’s 2016 Romance
“Pink Clouding” describes being swept into something euphoric before recognizing that the person entering the new relationship was not emotionally ready for what had been promised.
Her split from Harris was reported at the beginning of June. By June 15, photographs of Swift and Hiddleston kissing near her Rhode Island home had made their new relationship public.
An ELLE timeline from that summer documented how quickly things moved. Within weeks, Hiddleston had met Swift’s parents, Swift had met his mother in England, and the two had traveled together through Europe before heading to Australia.
Their romance also became part of Swift’s famous Fourth of July gathering in Rhode Island, where Hiddleston wore the “I ♥ T.S.” tank top that followed him through years of interviews.
The relationship ended in September after approximately three months. Reporting described the split as amicable, while neither Swift nor Hiddleston publicly provided a definitive account of why it ended.
‘Getaway Car’ Is a Major Part of the Hiddleston Theory
The comparisons did not begin with “Pink Clouding.” Fans have spent years interpreting “Getaway Car,” released on Reputation in 2017, as Swift’s account of leaving one relationship through another and eventually realizing that the second romance had unstable foundations of its own.
Swift has never publicly confirmed that “Getaway Car” is about Hiddleston, but the association has persisted because of the timing of her split from Harris and the rapid beginning of her relationship with Hiddleston.
EW points to several thematic echoes between the two songs, including dishonesty, a relationship described as doomed from its beginning and the idea of using a new romance as an escape from an unhappy one.
“Pink Clouding” changes the emotional emphasis. The new song looks backward from years later and focuses more directly on remorse over how the other person was treated.
The title adds another layer. “Pink clouding” is commonly used to describe the euphoric honeymoon-like period that can occur early in addiction recovery before more difficult realities return. The song appears to use that idea metaphorically for the temporary emotional high of a new relationship.
Hiddleston Later Spoke Tenderly About Their Breakup
Hiddleston said relatively little about Swift while they were together, although he publicly rejected claims that their romance was a publicity stunt. Months after the breakup, he offered a much more personal account in a 2017 GQ profile. “Of course it was real,” Hiddleston said. He described Swift as generous, kind and lovely and said they had “the best time.”
He also talked about the difficulty of trying to maintain a normal relationship while almost every public movement became material for photographs, speculation and competing narratives.
Writer Taffy Brodesser-Akner described continuing to talk with him about heartbreak after the formal interview appeared to be over, portraying someone still working through the emotional aftermath months later.
Both have long since moved on. Hiddleston built a family with Zawe Ashton, while Swift married Travis Kelce in July 2026. Reuters confirmed that Swift and Kelce married July 3 at Madison Square Garden.
‘Pink Clouding’ Arrived With Three Other New Songs

Swift released “Pink Clouding” on Sept. 25 alongside “Patient Zero,” “Cleveland!” and “Babylon” as the four new tracks on The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore.
Pitchfork confirmed all four songs on release day, while Swift’s official digital edition lists them as tracks 13 through 16 of the expanded album.
Swift had announced the project two days earlier. In the Instagram post, she explained that the new material came from a trip to Sweden to celebrate the success of The Life of a Showgirl with Max Martin and Shellback.
A studio happened to be nearby, and the three ended up writing more songs. The L.A. Times independently reported the announcement and confirmed the four-track expansion and Sept. 25 release date.
