Tobey Maguire and Jennifer Meyer are officially divorced nearly a decade after they first announced the end of their marriage.
A Los Angeles court has formally restored both of them to single status. The ruling closes the marital portion of a divorce case that remained open for years after Meyer initially filed.
The former couple still has issues to resolve, and those matters will continue separately with the help of a private judge, according to PEOPLE.
Maguire and Meyer have continued raising their two children together throughout the lengthy legal process, with Meyer repeatedly describing the actor as one of the closest people in her life despite their separation.
The Court Restored Maguire and Meyer to Single Status
Their marital status was terminated on Sept. 21, with the judgment filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Oct. 1.
Page Six reported that Meyer had requested a bifurcated judgment, allowing the court to dissolve the marriage before every other issue in the case was settled.
The court retained jurisdiction over matters raised in the original divorce petition and Maguire’s response that were not covered by the marital-status ruling. The former couple previously agreed to use a private judge as they work through those remaining issues.
Meyer Filed for Divorce Four Years After Their Separation
Maguire and Meyer married on Sept. 3, 2007, and announced their separation in October 2016 after nine years of marriage.
At the time, they said their priority would remain raising their children with “enduring love, respect and friendship.” Meyer waited until October 2020 to formally file for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences.
Maguire filed his response in July 2025 and sought joint legal and physical custody of their son, Otis. The former couple also shares daughter Ruby.
Meyer Says Maguire Became Her ‘Best Friend’ After Their Split
Meyer has spoken openly about the work it took for her and Maguire to build a close relationship after their marriage ended.
During a December 2025 appearance on The Inside Edit, she said their breakup came with “some big hurdles” before they reached the relationship they have today.
“I now have an ex-husband who is my best friend and would do anything for me, and I would do anything for him,” Meyer said, according to PEOPLE.
She has also praised Maguire as a father and said they try to keep major family occasions from becoming divided between separate households.
Their arrangement was especially visible during the Los Angeles wildfires in early 2025, when Meyer, her fiancé Geoff Ogunlesi and the children stayed with Maguire after evacuating.

Meyer became engaged to music executive Geoff Ogunlesi in August 2024.
The couple welcomed a daughter on May 20, 2026, and Meyer later shared the news publicly in a Father’s Day Instagram post showing Ogunlesi holding the baby.
Meyer has said Maguire and Ogunlesi have developed a friendship of their own. She recalled seeing Maguire, Ogunlesi and one of Maguire’s friends sitting together watching a movie while the blended family stayed under the same roof during the wildfires.
