Tom Cruise and Taylor Swift spent enough time deep in conversation at the Kansas City Chiefs’ season opener to leave viewers wondering what two of the world’s biggest stars could possibly have been discussing.
Now Cruise has answered the question himself. During his September 17th appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the 64-year-old actor revealed that Swift was doing something considerably less mysterious than social-media speculation suggested, teaching him about football.
“She was schooling me on football,” Cruise told Jimmy Fallon when asked about their animated conversation inside the Arrowhead Stadium suite. He said Swift now understands the game well enough to follow what is happening on the field, a dramatic change from the limited football knowledge she has acknowledged having when she first began dating Travis Kelce.
Football was not their only subject. Cruise said he and Swift also talked about music and movies while he praised her sense of humor, writing, musicianship and directing. His explanation finally adds context to a televised conversation that generated days of attention after the Chiefs’ September 14th season opener.
Cruise Says Swift Was ‘Schooling’ Him on Football
Fallon went directly to the question viewers had been asking after showing Cruise a photograph from the Chiefs-Broncos game. Cameras had repeatedly caught Cruise and Swift leaning toward one another and talking in the suite while the game continued below them.
According to Cruise, much of that conversation really was about what they were watching. “She was schooling me on football,” he said during the interview. Cruise added that Swift “knows her stuff” and said she was actively explaining the game to him.
The actor said he had not attended a football game since before the COVID-19 pandemic, making the Arrowhead visit something of a return to the sport as a spectator. Swift, meanwhile, has spent the past several seasons becoming one of the Chiefs’ most recognizable supporters.
Fallon also brought up Swift’s own admission that she understood very little about football when she first began dating Kelce. Swift joked about that learning curve during her 2025 appearance on the Kelce brothers’ New Heights podcast, where she recalled asking questions that made little sense once she understood how the game actually worked.

The curiosity began almost immediately after ESPN showed Swift and Cruise together during Kansas City’s September 14th game against the Denver Broncos. The NFL amplified the moment by sharing footage of the pair through its official X account.
Fallon followed the football answer with another obvious question: when Tom Cruise and Taylor Swift sit together for several hours, do they eventually talk about the industries that made them famous?
According to Cruise, they do. He said the two discussed both music and movies and repeatedly praised Swift’s creative abilities. Cruise called her funny, complimented her sense of humor and described her as a brilliant writer, musician and director.
He also said he has followed Swift’s career since she was young, suggesting that his enthusiasm was not based solely on their recent time together.
Their familiarity also predates the Chiefs game. Cruise attended Swift’s Eras Tour at London’s Wembley Stadium in June 2024, where he was photographed among the celebrity guests and exchanged friendship bracelets with fans.
More recently, he attended Swift and Kelce’s July 3rd wedding at Madison Square Garden in New York. Cruise’s presence at the ceremony has since been confirmed in multiple accounts from other guests.
Swift Was Following ‘Every Snap,’ Pat McAfee Says
ESPN personality Pat McAfee, who also spent time with the group at Arrowhead, later said Swift was “all in” on the game and following “every snap.”
McAfee remembered the suite erupting during the third quarter when Kelce caught a 59-yard pass from Patrick Mahomes and carried the ball to the Denver 4-yard line.
Kelce entered the season needing 45 receiving yards to pass Jason Witten for second place on the NFL’s all-time receiving-yardage list among tight ends. The 59-yard reception moved him past Witten during the game.
Kelce finished Kansas City’s 31-10 victory with three catches for 71 yards, bringing his career total to 13,073. He now trails only former Chiefs and Atlanta Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez in the category.
Swift had been publicly attending Chiefs games since September 2023, when she first appeared at Arrowhead for Kansas City’s game against the Chicago Bears.
