A 63-year-old Bronx man was arrested after police said he drove through the security gate at Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s East Hampton home.

Keith Jonathan Webster was driving a Subaru up the private driveway on Wednesday, July 15, when he failed to stop at the closed mechanical gates, according to The East Hampton Star. A security guard told police the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed before the crash.

Webster was charged with second-degree criminal mischief, a felony, and third-degree criminal trespass, a misdemeanor. Police said they found no weapons, no note and no direct threats, and investigators had not determined whether Webster knew the estate belonged to the music couple.

It remains unclear whether Beyoncé, Jay-Z or their children were home at the time. Detective Sgt. Jennifer Dunn said Webster appeared confused, but police are still treating the crash as a crime while they examine what led him to the property.

The Subaru Crashed Through the Closed Gates

The security guard was stationed inside a booth when he saw Webster’s Subaru moving quickly up the driveway. The vehicle continued toward the closed mechanical gates and crashed through them instead of stopping.

Police described the gate damage as severe. Webster’s Subaru also had significant front-end damage before it came to a stop inside the property.

Webster initially remained in the vehicle after the crash. Members of the estate’s private security team told him to get out, and police said he complied. When officers arrived, they found him restrained and seated in front of the damaged Subaru.

Police Said the Driver Made No Threats

Dunn told The East Hampton Star that Webster did not threaten the security team and did not mention Beyoncé, Jay-Z or anyone living at the house.

“He wasn’t making threats. He seemed confused,” Dunn said.

Page Six reported that Dunn said investigators found “no weapons,” “no notes” and “no direct threats.” She also said police were not sure Webster knew who lived at the property.

Investigators Traced His Route Before the Crash

Police used license-plate-reader cameras to review Webster’s movements before the incident. Dunn said he entered East Hampton Village early Wednesday, drove to Montauk and made multiple stops near Main Beach before ending up in the Georgica Pond area.

Webster also stopped at another house before entering Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s property. Police said he asked that homeowner for a woman who did not live there and left without incident when he was turned away.

Dunn said a health issue remained one possible explanation. “This could be a health issue,” she told The East Hampton Star, “but we have to treat it as a crime until proven otherwise.”

A Judge Issued a Stay-Away Order

Webster complained of pain after his arrest and was taken for medical treatment. He was later released back to police custody, arraigned and had his vehicle impounded as evidence.

Fox News, citing the East Hampton Press, reported that Justice Steven Tekulsky issued a stay-away order barring Webster from contacting Beyoncé or Jay-Z.

The outlet also reported that Webster appeared disoriented during the arraignment and was taken to a Stony Brook University Hospital mental-health facility for evaluation. Police said he had no criminal history, and the investigation remains open.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z purchased the East Hampton estate in 2017 for about $26 million. The home, known as Pond House, sits near Georgica Pond.

Architectural Digest reported at the time that the seven-bedroom, seven-and-a-half-bathroom home spans about 12,000 square feet on two acres.

The couple has not publicly commented on the gate crash. Police have not confirmed whether any members of the Carter family were inside the estate when Webster’s Subaru entered the driveway.
