Anne Hathaway used her first written Letterboxd review to praise Tom Cruise’s dark comedy Digger, days after its disappointing box-office debut.
Her entry for Alejandro González Iñárritu’s film is marked as watched on Oct. 7 and includes a like.
“I loved this brilliant movie,” Hathaway wrote in her Letterboxd review. “For me? 10/10.”
She encouraged viewers to make time for the movie and reach their own conclusions about it.
Her Profile Had Dozens of Films but Just One Rating

Hathaway’s public profile listed 46 films as of Oct. 8, with Digger its only rated title, at five stars. Her recent diary also included Verity, The End of Oak Street and The Odyssey.
“It’s smart and trippy and aggressive and funny and ambitious,” she wrote of Iñárritu’s movie. The account also displayed four favorites: Moonstruck, It Happened One Night, Mirror and Phantom Thread.
Hathaway’s ‘Verity’ Outgrossed ‘Digger’ on Their Opening Weekend
Both movies opened in North America on Oct. 2. Digger earned about $8 million from 3,321 theaters over the Oct. 2-4 weekend, while Hathaway’s Verity took the top spot with approximately $32.6 million, more than four times as much.
The Colleen Hoover adaptation stars Dakota Johnson as a writer hired to complete a book series for Hathaway’s incapacitated author. Michael Showalter directed the thriller, which also features Josh Hartnett.
Digger added an estimated $12 million internationally for a $20 million worldwide opening. The Associated Press reported that its production cost at least $125 million, with other estimates closer to $150 million, before marketing.
By Oct. 8, Box Office Mojo listed the film’s worldwide receipts at approximately $23 million. Opening audiences gave it a C+ CinemaScore.
Cruise Plays a Powerful Man Trying to Contain His Own Disaster
In Digger, Cruise plays Digger Rockwell, described in the Warner Bros. synopsis as the world’s most powerful man. He tries to prove he can save humanity from a catastrophe he unleashed.
The ensemble includes Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg and Jesse Plemons. Iñárritu shot the film entirely in VistaVision, with Cruise also serving as a producer. Warner Bros. released it in conventional theaters and IMAX.
Guillermo del Toro, Ron Howard and Glen Powell Also Praised It
Guillermo del Toro, a friend of Iñárritu, objected to a headline dismissing the value of seeing the film in a theater. He praised its scale, ambition and cinematic complexity.
Ron Howard praised Cruise’s performance and the movie’s twists in a post on X, while Glen Powell celebrated its spectacle and performances after attending the premiere, according to Entertainment Weekly. “This one is going to stand the test of time,” Powell wrote.
Hathaway and Cruise Are Set for Their First Movie Together
The actors will co-star in Paramount’s sequel to Days of Thunder. Cruise returns as Cole Trickle, the driver he played in the 1990 film, while Hathaway will portray a racing team owner and engineer.
Variety reported her casting in August and confirmed that Jonathan Levine will direct. Paramount has scheduled the sequel for June 2, 2028, with Cruise producing alongside Jerry Bruckheimer and Tommy Harper.
In July, Cruise shared a photograph of himself holding an IMAX ticket for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which stars Hathaway as Penelope and Matt Damon as Odysseus.
“Thank you for an amazing night in a movie theater. I can’t wait to see it again!” Cruise wrote to Nolan, producer Emma Thomas and the cast and crew in a post reproduced by The Credits.
