Elon Musk says his Grok Imagine platform will produce a full-length adaptation of The Odyssey before the end of 2026, following months of attacks on Christopher Nolan’s casting choices.
Musk announced the proposed film on X alongside a three-minute AI-generated scene featuring Odysseus and Calypso. He promised a version that would be “historically accurate and true to the art of Homer.”
The declaration came days after Nolan’s adaptation delivered the largest worldwide opening of his career. The Universal release earned $264.1 million during its first weekend, including $124.5 million in the United States and Canada.

The accompanying clip uses AI-generated performers, environments, voices and visual effects to depict a conversation between Odysseus and Calypso. The creator identified online as Heavy Pulp did not present it as footage from an existing feature-length production.
Musk did not explain what he meant by “historically accurate.” Completing a coherent feature before the end of December would require Grok Imagine to generate, edit and assemble the project within approximately five months.
Musk is not the first person to develop an AI-generated feature based on Homer’s poem. Filmmaker Ash Koosha and AI studio Fountain 0 have completed Odysseus: The Fall, a 135-minute production reportedly made for a five-figure budget. Fountain 0’s listing describes the forthcoming film as a retelling of the epic through the fractured memories of a drowning man and currently identifies it as “coming soon.”
The Announcement Follows His Attacks on Nolan’s Casting
Musk repeatedly criticized Nolan’s adaptation before its July 17 release, focusing primarily on Lupita Nyong’o’s casting as Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra. After Nyong’o’s roles were reported, Musk claimed Nolan had selected her because “he wants the awards” and wrote that the filmmaker had “lost his integrity.”
Musk also amplified attacks on Elliot Page after false reports circulated claiming Page would portray Achilles. Page actually plays Sinon, the Greek soldier associated with persuading the Trojans to accept the wooden horse.
Nolan dismissed arguments made before audiences had seen the film as “irrelevant” during a July interview with The Telegraph. Nyong’o separately defended the ensemble, noting that the source material is mythological and saying the cast represented the world in which the new film was made.
Nolan Has Rejected Predictions That AI Will Replace Filmmakers
Musk’s proposal contrasts sharply with Nolan’s production methods. The Odyssey was shot entirely with IMAX film cameras and relied heavily on constructed sets, practical elements and real locations.
Nolan has said younger audiences are already rejecting low-quality synthetic content, pointing to the widespread use of the phrase “AI slop.” He told The Guardian that he had rarely seen a technology embraced so enthusiastically by investors while facing such strong resistance from the public.
During a separate interview with French journalist Hugo Travers, Nolan compared artificial intelligence to a Trojan horse whose hidden occupants are obvious. He described it as a transparent horse made of glass because people can already see the risks inside it. Nolan also rejected the argument that generative tools will inevitably remove the human element from filmmaking, saying technology cannot reproduce the reasons people make art or form emotional connections with it.
