Harry Styles debuted the unreleased song “What Is Enough?” for Liam Payne at Madison Square Garden on Friday, October 16, 2026. The performance marked the second anniversary of his former One Direction bandmate’s death.

Payne died at 31 after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He and Styles first met as teenagers competing on The X Factor in 2010.

They formed One Direction alongside Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik. The group released five studio albums before going on hiatus in 2016, with its members pursuing solo careers.

Styles, 32, is now performing a 30-show residency on his Together, Together tour. The run continues through October 31 and supports his fourth studio album, Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally.

Styles Credits His Friends Before Asking Fans to Look After Each Other

Before playing, Styles spoke about the pride he felt seeing his name displayed high inside the arena. He credited friends and colleagues with helping him build the career that had brought him there, according to Rolling Stone.

The arena honored him with a permanent banner in September 2022 after a 15-show residency. Gayle King presented the tribute during his final performance of that run.

He acknowledged that some people in the room might have experienced a similar loss, adding that he hoped they had not.

“But really, it’s just about looking after each other,” he said.

“I’m gonna play you a song I wrote for my friend about two years ago, if that’s all right,” he told the crowd, according to Us Weekly.

Styles accompanied himself on guitar, singing the line, “You dance until you’re tired.”

“Get home safe, tell someone you love that you love them,” he added, Complex reported.

At the end of his Wembley Stadium residency earlier this year, Styles had thanked his former bandmates individually, referring to Payne as “my dear friend Liam,” Capital reported.

Styles Described the Pressure to Share His Grief in Public

Styles discussed Payne with Zane Lowe in an Apple Music interview released March 4, 2026. Their conversation took place in Paris ahead of the album’s March 6 release.

One difficulty, he said, was the feeling that other people could “own part of your grief.” He was dealing with intense emotions while also becoming aware that people expected him to express them publicly, TheWrap reported.

He worried that keeping those feelings private might be interpreted as evidence that he was not experiencing them.

Payne had ambitions to achieve great things, Styles told Lowe, and losing somebody whose life so closely resembled his own made the bereavement particularly difficult.

The loss led him to reconsider how he wanted to spend his time. He described fully embracing life as a way to honor friends who had died.

On October 17, 2024, Styles shared an Instagram carousel that opened with a photograph of Payne performing before a crowd. His written statement appeared on the second slide, while the post’s caption was a black heart emoji.

He remembered Payne’s pleasure in making other people happy and the energy he brought to those around him. The years they had shared, he wrote, would remain among those he valued most.

“I will miss him always, my lovely friend,” he wrote.

Styles extended his sympathy to Payne’s parents, Karen and Geoff; his sisters, Nicola and Ruth; and his son, Bear. He also acknowledged people around the world who had known and loved Payne.

The four surviving members of One Direction released a joint statement calling Payne their brother and saying they needed time to grieve and process the loss.

Styles, Horan, Tomlinson and Malik later attended his funeral on November 20, 2024. The service was held at St. Mary’s Church in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, according to Reuters.
