Maddox Jolie-Pitt has reportedly filed to remove “Pitt” from his legal name.
The 24-year-old son of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt filed paperwork requesting to go by Maddox Chivan Jolie, according to PEOPLE. The request has not yet been approved, so the legal name change is not final.
The filing follows a public shift in how Maddox has been credited professionally. He was listed as Maddox Jolie while working as an assistant director on Jolie’s film Couture, after previously being credited as Maddox Jolie-Pitt on Jolie’s 2024 film Maria.
Maddox Reportedly Cited Personal Reasons
Page Six reported that court documents cited “personal” reasons for the requested name change.
Maddox has not publicly explained the filing in detail. A court still has to approve the request before Maddox Chivan Jolie becomes his legal name.
The wording matters here: Maddox has reportedly filed to drop the Pitt surname. He has not been reported as having completed the legal change yet.
Other Jolie-Pitt Children Have Also Used Jolie Without Pitt
Maddox is not the first of Jolie and Pitt’s children to move away from the Pitt surname publicly. Entertainment Weekly noted that Shiloh legally dropped “Pitt” from her name after turning 18.
Zahara and Vivienne have also used Jolie without Pitt in public or professional settings. Zahara introduced herself as Zahara Marley Jolie during a Spelman College event, while Vivienne was credited as Vivienne Jolie in the Playbill for The Outsiders.
Shiloh’s change went through the legal process. Maddox’s request is reportedly still awaiting approval. Zahara and Vivienne have used Jolie in specific public or professional settings, but those uses have not been reported as completed legal name changes.
The Filing Follows Years of Public Family Strain

Jolie filed for divorce from Pitt in 2016 after more than a decade together and two years of marriage. PEOPLE reported that the former couple finalized their divorce in 2024 after years of legal proceedings.
Reports around the family have described Pitt’s relationship with some of his children as strained. That background explains why the filing is drawing attention, but it does not confirm Maddox’s private reasoning beyond the reported court documents.
If approved, Maddox Chivan Jolie would become his legal name. Until then, the story remains a reported filing, not a completed name change.
