Rob Lowe and his family are supporting younger brother Chad Lowe and Chad’s wife, Kim Painter, following the death of their 13-year-old daughter, Fiona.

“Rob and Chad are very close,” a family source told PEOPLE. The source said relatives and friends have gathered around Chad and Kim as they grieve.

Fiona died on Sept. 29. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner later listed the manner of her death as suicide.

The loss comes less than two years after Chad, Kim and their daughters lost their Pacific Palisades home in the January 2025 wildfires, another period when Rob publicly stepped in to help his brother’s family.

The Family Is Focused on Supporting Chad and Kim

The family source said the priority now is making sure Chad and Kim have people around them who know and love them.

“Everyone’s heartbroken,” the source said, adding that relatives and friends are focused on helping in whatever ways Chad and Kim need.

Rob had also offered practical support after the Palisades fire destroyed his brother’s home. In a February 2025 PEOPLE interview, he said Chad had received plenty of “big brother hand-me-downs” as the family began rebuilding.

Chad and Kim Remembered Fiona as Smart, Creative and Loving

Chad and Kim announced their daughter’s death in a family statement and asked for privacy and prayers.

They remembered Fiona as a loving girl who was smart, creative and passionate about dance. She was the middle of their three daughters, between Mabel, 17, and Nixie, 10.

Entertainment Weekly reported that the medical examiner listed Fiona’s death as a suicide after she died at a hospital on Sept. 29.

The family also directed anyone struggling with mental health to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, which can be reached in the United States by calling or texting 988.

Support has also come from longtime friends of the family. David Boreanaz, who worked with Chad on Bones, shared a photograph of their families together on Instagram on Oct. 1.

He offered his condolences to Chad and Kim and remembered Fiona as a “beautiful soul,” adding that he hoped she was surrounded by light and dance.

Painter responded to the tribute in the comments, telling Boreanaz, “Love you so much @imdboreanaz – we all do.”

Rob and Chad Have Also Worked Together on ‘9-1-1: Lone Star’

Rob and Chad’s relationship has crossed into their professional lives as well. Chad directed multiple episodes of 9-1-1: Lone Star and appeared onscreen as the brother of Rob’s character, Owen Strand.

Rob has previously described the ease of working with his younger brother as almost instinctive. During an episode of his Literally! With Rob Lowe podcast, he said the two often understood what the other was thinking without needing a long explanation.

The collaboration eventually extended to another generation of the family when Chad directed an episode written by Rob’s son John Owen Lowe.
