Travis Kelce liked NBC’s Instagram video of Shane Gillis’ latest Saturday Night Live monologue as the comedian faced criticism from fellow entertainers, Us Weekly reported on Oct. 13.

A source close to Kelce told Page Six that “he’s always been a massive fan of the show and he was supporting a friend.” Neither report included a direct response from Kelce.

Gillis, 38, hosted the Oct. 10 episode with musical guest Rosalía. It was his third hosting appearance, seven years after NBC dropped him from the cast before his first episode when podcast clips containing racist and homophobic remarks resurfaced.

Kelce, 37, made his own hosting debut in March 2023 and returned for a cameo that October.

Gillis discussed feeling uncomfortable at a public gym before turning to women’s workout clothes. He used the word “whores” to describe women wearing shorts, then compared the neon colors of their outfits to artificial fishing bait.

He also joked that men should not look because other gymgoers were filming themselves and he could end up in the background of their TikToks. The studio audience responded with a mixture of laughter and groans.

Later in the episode, Gillis accidentally swore during a Green Eggs & Ham sketch. He briefly broke character and apologized for the slip during the closing goodnights.

Gillis Joined Kelce at Tight End University in June

Gillis was spotted on the field at Tight End University in Nashville on June 23, according to the San Francisco 49ers. Kelce founded the event with George Kittle and former NFL tight end Greg Olsen in 2021.

The three-day program brings players together for film study, on-field drills and advice from current and retired tight ends. This year’s gathering expanded into Vanderbilt University’s FirstBank Stadium and admitted fans for the first time.

Gillis also appeared at that evening’s Tight Ends & Friends concert at The Pinnacle. Taylor Swift joined Lainey Wilson for “Love Story,” while Kelce and Kittle participated in an onstage keg stand, ABC Audio reported.

In an Oct. 11 Instagram video, Dan Levy rejected the idea that women’s gym clothes justified insulting them. The Schitt’s Creek star said “more men need to be standing up in opposition to it,” according to PEOPLE, and argued that objectification in the media influences how women are treated outside it.

Elizabeth Banks and Sophia Bush were among those supporting Levy in the comments. Bush thanked him, while Banks wrote, “Nailed it,” Entertainment Weekly reported.

Former SNL cast member Ego Nwodim posted a gym mirror selfie captioned “Whore reporting for duty.” Maren Morris responded on Oct. 12 with a video of herself raising a middle finger, set to her song “be a bitch.” Her caption read, “leave my gym short wedgie out of it.”

Bobby Bones Apologized After Initially Praising the Monologue

Radio host Bobby Bones initially praised Gillis on his 25 Whistles podcast, saying he respected the comedian’s willingness to take chances. He particularly enjoyed the comparison between workout clothes and fishing lures, and defended the joke in a TikTok video that was later deleted.

In an Oct. 13 Instagram video, however, Bones apologized. He said his wife had warned him that his remarks could be interpreted more broadly than he intended, Country Now reported.

“My fault. I should have watched the whole thing,” he said.
