Shane Gillis broke character after accidentally dropping an F-bomb during a Dr. Seuss-inspired sketch on the Oct. 10 episode of Saturday Night Live.
The comedian was hosting the NBC series for the third time, with Rosalía appearing as the evening’s musical guest.
In “Green Eggs & Ham,” Gillis played Zachary, a protective son who intervenes when his father is pressured to eat a dish he has already rejected.
Mikey Day played the father, while Andrew Dismukes appeared as Sam-I-Am, keeping his breakfast pitch going despite the son’s growing frustration.

“He said he doesn’t f***ing,” Gillis began before catching himself with “Jeez!” He bent forward, raised a hand toward the audience and struggled to suppress a laugh as Dismukes gave him a reassuring pat.
The audience laughed while Gillis tried to resume his dialogue. Later, as the father ordered his son out of the house, Day worked the mistake into the family argument.
“You’re a loser and you said a bad word!” Day told him, according to PEOPLE.
“Yes, I did,” Gillis replied. The cast continued through the scene, and he offered a short apology before it ended.
The Family Argument Ends With a Gift-Card Scam
Zachary’s suspicion of Sam-I-Am comes from his father’s history of falling for scams. He explains that his dad previously sent $9,000 in Target gift cards to someone in Mumbai, according to Variety.
His father responds by mocking Zachary’s job at Jimmy John’s, which the son insists on calling “James Jonathon.” The dispute expands to include his parents’ failed marriage and the revelation that his mother left his father for the Lorax.
After the father finally agrees to try the food, Sam-I-Am reveals what he wants in return: $5,000 in Walmart gift cards for acquaintances in Dubai.
The Online Version Keeps the Live Reactions
SNL uploaded the live performance rather than footage from dress rehearsal, Vulture reported. The official YouTube version mutes the offending word while retaining Gillis’ reaction and the surrounding dialogue.
Previous accidental profanity on the show includes Jenny Slate’s first episode in 2009 and Kristen Stewart’s opening monologue in February 2017.
His Monologue Drew Different Reactions From Reviewers
Gillis opened the episode with stand-up about losing weight, hiking and feeling uncomfortable in public gyms. His routine also covered being teased by his sisters and conversations with comedians Joe Rogan and Theo Von.
Variety criticized the set’s pacing and described groans following a derogatory remark about women’s workout clothes. Gillis continued with jokes about tight shorts and accidentally appearing in the background of strangers’ gym videos.
He finished with material about his receding hairline and a comparison involving Adolf Hitler. The Guardian offered a different assessment of the room, saying the audience remained mostly receptive to the monologue.
Gillis Was Dropped From the Cast Before His 2019 Debut
SNL announced Gillis as a new cast member in September 2019 alongside Chloe Fineman and Bowen Yang. Days later, the show dropped him after podcast recordings containing racist and homophobic remarks resurfaced.
A statement issued through a representative for Lorne Michaels said producers had been unaware of the remarks when they hired him and acknowledged shortcomings in the vetting process, TMZ reported.
Gillis continued working in stand-up and podcasting and later co-created and starred in Netflix’s automotive workplace comedy Tires.
He returned to SNL as host on Feb. 24, 2024, joking during his monologue that viewers unfamiliar with his firing should avoid looking it up. His second hosting appearance followed on March 1, 2025.

The singer had performed “Reliquia” and “Magnolias” from her album Lux. Pitchfork reported that she performed the former entirely en pointe.
It was Rosalía’s third appearance on SNL. She first appeared alongside Bad Bunny in 2021 before making her solo musical-guest debut in March 2022.
Standing with the cast at the end of the show, Gillis thanked Rosalía and briefly returned to the slip: “Sorry about earlier.”
