Whoopi Goldberg has a practical reason for enjoying voice acting. Asked what she likes about the work, she replied, “The fact that I can do it in my underwear.”

The 70-year-old actress made the remark in an interview with Carolyn Twersky Winkler published by W Magazine on October 27th.

Her recent animated roles include Cupcake, an elderly, bald cat with a dirty mouth in Kevin. Goldberg said the part surprised her with how much fun it turned out to be.

She is also continuing to act on camera. Netflix announced in September that production was underway on Women Like Us, an upcoming dramedy starring Goldberg alongside Jenifer Lewis, Vanessa Williams and Vivica A. Fox.

Cupcake Gave Goldberg Plenty of Room to Swear

Goldberg told W that people often become nervous when she curses. On this production, she said, everyone seemed pleased when she did it.

Created by Aubrey Plaza and Joe Wengert, the adult animated comedy follows a housecat who leaves his owners after their breakup and moves into a pet rescue in Astoria, Queens. Jason Schwartzman voices the title character, while Cupcake is one of his new feline roommates.

The eight-episode first season premiered on April 20th. Prime Video also announced John Waters, Aparna Nancherla and Amy Sedaris among the series regulars.

‘A Good Check’ Keeps Her at ‘The View’

Goldberg was equally direct when W asked why she keeps returning to the daytime talk show. “A good check,” she answered, adding that she earns her pay and accepts that audiences will not always like what she says.

She also said she did not expect movie roles to offer her the same pay as male actors. Her television salary had come up during an August appearance on Baby, This Is Keke Palmer, when she joked that its size would surprise people.

As Entertainment Weekly reported, Goldberg recalled needing work when Barbara Walters offered her the job in 2007. She had been hosting a radio show and immediately accepted the invitation.

Her film commitments have occasionally required adjustments. Wealth of Geeks reported in September that she would temporarily miss some broadcasts while filming, with former cohosts covering her absences.

Goldberg Had Hoped to Make ‘Sister Act 3’ With Maggie Smith

Sister Act 3 remains in the works. Goldberg told W she had wanted to make the sequel before Maggie Smith died in 2024, but the production had not come together in time.

Disney announced the sequel in December 2020, with Goldberg returning to star and produce and Tyler Perry also producing.

Her Monologues Returned With Five Performers

The Whoopi Monologues revisited Goldberg’s 1984 Broadway solo show with an ensemble directed by Whitney White. The cast included Kerry Washington, Kara Young, Dominique Fishback, Kecia Lewis and Danielle Pinnock, according to Lincoln Center Theater.

Washington, Young, White and Pinnock discussed the production on The View in the June 25th interview above. The show subsequently opened Off-Broadway at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater in July and finished its run on August 30th, as Broadway Direct confirms.

Goldberg told W that Washington had approached her with the revival idea. She chose not to attend rehearsals or discuss the show with the cast, giving them space to develop their own interpretations. Her casting recommendation was Young for Fontaine.
